❹ Bow and Arrow as "Betrothal Gift" (Symbolic of Relationship)
Crafting a bow and arrow for the "wife" as a wedding gift
① Tushan Hou gave Yi Ying a bow and arrow.
The Young Master (Tushan Hou) gave a bow and arrow to Fangfeng Yiying.
(At first, I misunderstood this part. I didn’t expect the maid to actually know about the secret affair between Yiying and Hou, and to speak it out so directly… I didn’t realize right away that the “Young Master” referred to Hou...)
Turns out the maid clearly knew the difference and was well aware of many things.
• Hou considered Yiying as his wife.
"Through thick and thin."
Hou publicly acknowledged Yi Ying as his wife in front of Jing.
② Xiangliu gave Xiao Yao a bow and arrows.
Xiangliu gave a bow and arrows to Xiao Yao.
•The bow and arrows recognized their master.
The drama version altered the process of the weapon’s ownership recognition (in the novel version, Xiao Yao used her own demon blood to bind the bow to herself).
"Three drops of essence blood" to bind ownership.
One drop from Xiangliu, one drop from Xiaoyao — the essence blood of a man and a woman merged, giving birth to a new blood... (read between the lines).
It exists within the woman's body... (read between the lines).
❻ Snake Demon and Nine-Tailed Fox Demon (Allegorical Imagery)
① The Snake and Fox Fable
In the story told by Xiao Yao, the snake demon and nine-tailed fox demon represent metaphorical counterparts of the listeners.
● Snake Demon —— Xiang Liu
Complete hidden subplot of the snake demon — only snakes can understand it.
The snake demon was killed by the nine-tailed fox demon.
Snake egg — the offspring of the snake demon (the "snake egg" symbolizes a person).
Xiaoyao "successfully stole the snake egg."
"Xiao Liu refers to giving birth as 'laying an egg'."
"●Nine-tailed fox demons — Tushan Jing (imprisoned in both body and mind), Cang Xuan (bloodline sealed, imprisoned at Little Moon Peak)."
"Bound by the 'Fifteen-Year Pact' in the Dragonbone Prison."
"Insert a Xianglin_...?"
"Really dislike talkative guys, like Xianglin’s Wife — this line is quoted from Tong Hua’s letter to Meng Jue in Yun Zhong Ge."
"It's well known that Tushan Jing corresponds to the nine-tailed fox demon, and as for Cang Xuan, it's because he once had a fox tail too."
Fox tail
Cang Xuan threw away his fox tail, and Xiao Yao had Tushan Jing pick it up and turn it into a fox puppet.
Cangxuan wants to catch her and take her back to Xiaoyue Ding; she feels like she has nowhere to go. (Ignore the changes made in the drama version.)
The nine-tailed fox demon feeds her disgusting, messy things — acting as a socialite, constantly drifting between several men, having an affair with Tushan Jing and playing the role of the third party.
“Using blood as a guide,” poison the nine-tailed fox demon, cut off its tail, and escape from the prison.
"Xiao Yao’s personal growth subplot outline"
The nine-tailed fox demon is a relative of the Tushan clan.
[Personal understanding: The main subject that the nine-tailed fox demon symbolizes is unlikely to be Cangxuan. Xiao Yao values Cangxuan’s life even more than her own... Xiao Yao would never poison her cousin even if it meant poisoning herself... There is hatred and enmity between the nine-tailed fox demon and Xiao Yao... Of course, there are other interpretations and analyses; as long as they are reasonable, differences can be accepted and respected.]
Xiao Yao wouldn’t kill her own brother even if it meant killing herself (Would Xiao Yao really hesitate to kill the nine-tailed fox demon? Poisoning the nine-tailed fox demon alone is not enough to settle the hatred — she cuts off all its tails!)
(Subplot analysis and discussion “Xiao Yao uses blood to poison the nine-tailed fox demon” can be seen in _Table of Contents 3-❶-①①)
…
◐ The “willing” spiritual power
Willingly being eaten
When the divine clan’s essence blood and spiritual power are consumed by demons, one must be willing in order to achieve the greatest effect and function.
This is also the reason why the nine-tailed fox demon wants to refine Xiao Yao into a medicine person (Xiao Yao’s powerful spiritual energy cultivated on Yushan is unwilling to be consumed; refining her into a medicine person can maximize its effect by being directly consumed).
② Comparison and context of the snake and fox fable
Suggestion for this part ⚠️: Read the entire content of this article before making comparisons (personal understanding, for reference only)
- The snake demon is very dangerous
- The fox demon was seriously injured
- The fox demon understood my fear, and I trusted it.

❼ Master and servant (Servant causing trouble chapter)
① The setting of master and servant
● The drama repeatedly emphasizes the hierarchical relationship among the three.
"Tushan Jing is Xiao Yao's servant."
"Xiao Yao belongs to Xiang Liu.
● A disguised servant 'listens to you,' a true servant 'listens to what can be heard.'"**
Let me know if you'd like an explanation or cultural context behind the phrases.
"Disguised servant".
"Real servant"
● The true relationship between Yao and Jing is [being like a mother to each other, mutually dependent]...
"Yao acts like a mother to Jing."
"Jing acts like a mother to Yao"
[Obedient]
• Mother and daughter
"Be obedient and well-behaved"
"Listen to mom's words
• Yao and Jing"
"If you don't behave, I won't want you anymore."
"Obey" / "Be obedient"
● Benefactor and the one who receives the favor
A benefactor who expects something in return and the recipient of the favor
● A servant guards the door for the master
Tushan Jing guards the door for Xiang Liu
In the broadcast version, all the adjustments take place indoors
"Stand at the door" or "Standing at the doorway."
"Didn't even get to kowtow"—or more literally—"Not even a head to kowtow with."
"The master kowtows, the servant is punished by being made to stand."
"The servant serves tea and pours water."
"In the drama version, Cang Xuan paid respects at his aunt's real grave, while the fake son-in-law Tushan Jing could only pay respects at a fake grave."
"…

• Set up Fenglong for Cangxuan
Cangxuan befriending Fenglong would also be an emotionally complicated matter...
• Persuade Fenglong to gamble — to stake the lives of the Chishui clan’s young members (push Fenglong to the front, while staying in the shadows himself)
Do you only want to be the Chishui clan leader?
Reached an agreement
*– Not content with just being the Chishui clan leader—then what else could you possibly be?
1. Want to be king? Ruler of the Great Wilderness?
(The Chishui clan leader is already the head of all clans and the four great noble families. Anything above that… is to be king.)**
2. Want to be the powerful minister behind the ruler of the Great Wilderness...?
If you fail: You gamble with the lives of the Chishui clan’s young, just to serve under Cangxuan?
If you succeed: Your achievements will outshine the ruler’s — aren’t you afraid of being discarded once you’re no longer useful?
(So does Tushan Jing actually want to persuade Fenglong to become a king or a minister...?)

"▽–Trade 1 between Xiangliu and Tushan Jing"

"The soldiers are only investigating the missing provisions? Where did the weapons go?"
"On the surface, it appeared that Xiangliu initiated the deal using Xiaoyao as the bargaining chip, but in reality, Tushan Jing knowingly went along and accepted the trade only for Xiaoyao... (the overt plotline). It was also because Xiangliu, after witnessing Xiaoyao kiss Tushan Jing at Muxiyuan, understood her choice and decided to let go. He accepted the trade as a way to repay the grace of being taught."
Jing: "I only agreed to the deal because I got what I wanted."
Liu: "Drop the act. I know what you really want."
Liu: "I'm not going after her anymore. Whether you take her or not—it's up to you."

*–That night, whose truth did Tushan Jing really see? What was the truth behind it all?
"Minor changes in the drama version"
1. He told Chang that Yiying turned into Xiaoyao — and he couldn’t tell the difference? (Did Yiying also use a divine artifact to disguise herself?)
2. He told Xiaoyao that he mistook Yiying for her because his grandmother drugged him?
3. Born with spirit-sight (except when a divine artifact is involved), neither of the two reasons above should have made him mistake someone’s identity...
(If he couldn’t have mistaken anyone that night in the first place, what was he really trying to see with the Time Lamp???)
▽–The Deal Between Xiangliu and Tushan Jing (Part 2)
After Xiangliu receives the ice crystal orb warning, he will definitely go to stop the wedding (if he doesn’t, something very serious will happen on Yaofeng and Fenglong’s wedding night — you all know what that implies…)
She refuses to marry Fenglong (Xiao Yao is unwilling), but agrees to go find Jing (Xiao Yao is also willing).
Xiangliu: (“The gu is still there and you expect me to wear a green hat?”) Did you even ask if I agreed?
Xiangliu and Jing gave each other a way out gracefully.
Jing: ("I’ll take over—there’s no risk of you being cuckolded, it’s safe.") You know what I mean—go stop the wedding. I’ll provide supplies every year.
Jing: “Are you taking it or not?”
Xiangliu: “Of course I am.”
Liu: "You want to teach me how to act? Let me remind you of what happened in '37 — think about it carefully. I saved her = she saved your life. This is the payment for saving your life."

Liu: Hehe, you’ll have to experience it yourself.
● Cangxuan Attacks Gaoxin
(This section mainly focuses on Cangxuan. Not sure where it fits, so I’m including it here.)
The attack on Gaoxin primarily highlights Cangxuan’s ambition for power — no legitimate reason for launching the invasion can really be found...
㊀ After ascending the throne as the Xuanyuan King, he relocated the capital from Xuanyuan City to Zhiyi City and made Xinyue his empress.
❽ Mazi Chuntao, Chuanzi Sang Tian’er
Ma-Tao vs Yao-Liu, Chuan-Sang vs Yao-Jing — these two allegories are pretty obvious, right?

The King of Gaoxin did not approve.
The old Xuanyuan King didn’t approve.
They went through hardships, but in the end, it was a happy ending.
The wedding was lively and joyful; Xiang Liu gave a gift and gave his blessing.
Mazi is a live-in son-in-law of the Gao family.

On the surface, Yao comes to understand that “Sang Tian’er and someone she doesn’t love (though if some believe she does love Chuanzi, that’s fine too… respect and interpret like Hamlet)” can still spend a lifetime together and grow old in peace.
After that, she goes back and helps Jing solve his problems. Jing, too, doesn’t mind that Yao and Liu are “connected in heart and mind”…
What a beautiful mutual devotion!

What (someone) wants/The desired thing
I just want someone by my side — nothing else matters. Is love even important?
[This blogger’s opinion: As for storylines like this — finding a “stand-in” (where companionship is used to satisfy a pathological need, with no need for love) — in my view, it’s a cringeworthy portrayal of so-called “mutual devotion.” To me, it’s Tong Hua’s way of offering a reverse life lesson for women — a cautionary tale.
Of course, some people may feel that there’s nothing wrong with this behavior (if they have a healthy worldview) — that choosing someone who fulfills your personal needs is reasonable and valid. That viewpoint is also respected and understood!]Tong Hua OS (inner monologue):
If I didn’t portray the twisted behavior in the main storyline more bluntly, I never would’ve expected so many people to actually enjoy this kind of “threesome” emotional dynamic — having one in your heart while clinging to another. Incredible, my dear Yao!
Unexpected interruption… Sister Lüping’s savage comment:
The main storyline’s Yao-Jing pair are two absolute psychos.
(As for Liuzi, he was forced into this messed-up threesome because of the love curse… In the end, he just couldn’t take it anymore and had no choice but to "grant their wish" and let those two crazy people be locked together forever...)
…If the main storyline wants to have Tushan Jing’s “eternal companionship,” then she has to take down the original wife and seize the position herself…

Realizing she was being secretly watched by Tushan Jing, she deliberately acted incompatible.
[No longer meeting again]
Darling, be careful of Tushan Jing. We can’t meet anymore, but we still have the Gu (love curse).
Letting your wife take risks, and cleaning up the mess when danger comes — not for ordinary people! You’re not Liuzi. You don’t have what it takes to back her up! Don’t get yourself killed trying!!!

Ordinary poison can’t escape detection by the poison-testing artifact.

② Tang Monk’s Flesh
In the original Journey to the West, Chapter 27:
The first mention that eating Tang Monk’s flesh grants immortality appears here.
She (White Bone Spirit), standing in the clouds and riding the gloomy wind, saw the elder monk sitting on the ground and joyfully exclaimed:
“Fortune! Fortune! For years, we’ve heard tales of the Tang monk from the Eastern Lands on his journey for the Great Vehicle. He is the reincarnation of Golden Cicada, a true body cultivated over ten lifetimes. Anyone who eats even a piece of his flesh shall gain longevity and immortality. At last, the day has come.”

③ Queen Mother’s Peach Banquet
The “Peach Banquet,” also known as the Grand Peach Feast or Immortal Peach Festival, is a grand heavenly celebration in Chinese mythology. According to legend, the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month marks the birthday of the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu). On this day, she hosts a grand banquet with peaches of immortality as the main delicacy, inviting gods and immortals from all realms to celebrate her birthday.
The peaches grow in the Peach Garden and are harvested by the Seven Fairies. This story is primarily drawn from the Ming dynasty immortal novel Journey to the West.

❹ Dream of the Red Chamber / (Ending Analysis)
The writing style of Chang Xiang Si borrows from the classic Dream of the Red Chamber — one of the Four Great Classical Novels
The traces of the grass snake and gray lines lie hidden across a thousand miles.
Chang Xiang Si is actually a “detective novel,” and this drama adaptation has added many hidden plotlines about political intrigue…
