MayaDavid:
I agree with this. I don’t think Jing is weak and ineffective. I think that is how XY liked him to be. That was their dynamic. I think Jing understood this and behaved as how XY wanted him to be.

This is an interesting observation. We talked about how useless Jing is all the time on this thread, but it would be quite sinister if he was truly practising weaponised incompetence. I'm not good with recalling details (not how I like to read) so I can't really add much to whether there are other instances that may support this observation, but I think it is worth bringing it up over to the other thread. The ladies over there will probably be able to quote passages from the book for and against this hypothesis :-)

 MayaDavid:
XY was scared of being with a strong man. She wanted to be in control because of her psychological issues. I think one of her biggest issues with XL was that she had no control over him.

 MayaDavid:
I think she was both attracted to him and was scared of him (of having no control)

Yes. Xiao Yao mentioned this herself in her conversation with her grandfather. She picked people that are weaker and needed her so that they wouldn't/couldn't leave her. It is about control and it does come from her childhood trauma.

 MayaDavid:
I used to think that she did not know all the things that XL did. But after reading through the other thread and rereading the book, now I think that deep down she knew everything (except the laughing doll may be) and deluded herself both because of her fears

Xiao Yao absolute is aware of the things that Xiang Liu did, not everything, but enough to surmise his feelings for her. I mentioned in a recent post on the other thread that Xiao Yao practices willful ignorance and self-deception as forms of self-protection so that she doesn't have to make a choice about whether or not to pursue a relationship with him.

What the hell did I wrote here? “I show the m the marshmallows faces”. Lol go home Nathanna, you’re drunk.

Lol I turn around for one second and there are marshmallows, licking faces, insanely sweet strawberry videos. What is going on hahaha

If you have a Weibo account here's detailed instructions on how to vote for Tan Jian Ci,  the various Weibo Awards he's up for.  Apparently, you can vote 5? times per day.  Plus there's a way to get more votes.

Just a typical day with Tan Jian Ci and his fans. ;p

Sorry I cant reply properly because its telling me I cannot quote a long post.

Anyways, agreed that Jing can be firmer than how he makes himself out to be infront of XY. But a large part of his weakness is also how

1) he couldn't solve his own problems

2) he couldn't stand his ground

3) his mentality is so weak - instead of getting XY and himself out of the fire, he choose to roast himself with her. I mean, he ain't a doctor nor is he all-knowing. Even if he thought XY is gone, couldn't there be a small glimmer of hope that with 2 kingdoms behind them, XY could have a chance somewhat? And sure enough she did, although the chance came from XL. But no, LET'S BURN TOGETHER.

4) win a physical fight, not against XL (duh), CX, Hou etc

I'm asian but I was never a fan of C-dramas. Never heard of TJC or any of the casts in LYF =P How ignorant of me.

Watched LYF entirely by chance as XL's picture on netflix was intriguing (who's that gorgeous white haired fella?). Started off liking YSQ and disliking XL's harshness, but that soon changed. Anyone with eyes and brains can see who's the toxic person vs good guy.

I've never stepped into the fox thread because based on your description of them, the discussion there is so dum dum so why waste my time. If they cannot put forth their points intelligently and back them up with evidence, then its just diarrhea coming out of their buttholes IMO. Or maybe I'm too old to want to deal with kid-like humans on the internet O_o

From a neutral I-knew-nothing-about these-actors POV,

DW looks quite good, but as I watched their interactions on Hello, Saturday / their cast interviews, it became very obvious that TJC's personality is just sooooooooooo much more attractive. He's the life of the party. He doesn't mind acting like a clown as the situation warrants for laughs. He can be silly, funny, hawt, gentle, professional ~~! Such a down to earth, relatable dude.

Yes.  It's very annoying that there is a limit on how much you can quote.  And apparently it counts all the lines, even from other people, if they were quoted.  But, if you highlight a section of a post, on the top left hand corner of what you highlighted will appear a gray button that says 'Quote'.  Click on that button and it will quote what you highlighted.  If the button doesn't appear, right click on the highlighted section and the 'Quote' button will appear on the top left hand corner.

Glad you did! :)

Happy to help.  It took me forever to figure out the quoting thing here.

Thank goodness for these discussion threads and grateful for this community. I was buying some stuff on taobao and saw a ton of TJC merchandise.  Took my entire being to resist getting them because I'm migrating and don't need more things to ship across borders. It pained me not buying anything, it really did. I'll make up for it once I'm settled in the new place :D

I am in the same boat.  I watched my first C-Drama in January (The Rebel Princess) and was hooked.  Though, I had watched Hong Kong and Chinese movies before, but there's not a whole lot of cross over with C-Dramas.  So, I'd never heard of Tan Jian Ci, either, though I knew Yang Zi had been in Ashes of Love, which I haven't gotten to yet.  Strangely enough, I'd only seen the two Foxes before.  Deng Wei  in Till The End of the Moon and Nie Zi Hou in Beauty of Resilence.  Oh, and Chen Chuang who played Lao Mu, I'd seen in Strange Tales of the Tang Dynasty and of course Daddy Emperor, who has been typecast as Dad / Emperor in so many shows.

I wish Netflix in the US and Europe would get LYF.  Instead we got the Longest Promise, which I watched, but it was a chore.  I have to say, I was a bit surprised at how much they showed of everyone getting beaten up at the beginning.  I was used to the spotless fights, except for the spitting up blood.  But I think it did a good job of hammering home how much trauma everyone had experienced.

I agree.  I love him on Hello Saturday!  He seems to be very collected, but fun person.  Of course, he's been in the business for a long time, so he's got a lot of experience.  But even before becoming a regular on Hello Saturday, Tan Jian Ci was entertaining and willing to play just about any role.

That's way more than I've ever watched. I need to catch all of TJC's other shows now. K-dramas, move over!

Oh I didn't realize LYF wasn't on Netflix US/Europe. I assumed they paid for the show and will offer it in all the regions. I love how the cover picture for LYF is either XY or XL. I have never seen any of the other casts on the cover.

Indeed, his self confidence is super attractive. There're so many videos of him that I will love to watch, I can never seem to catch all of them.  Between catching up with the 9895437873 threads of XL/TJC here and TJC's videos, there's no time left for anything T__T

This Hello, Saturday episode with the LYF cast members had me in stitches multiple times. TJC x YZ chemistry is so good =0)

@pomelotree

No, sadly many Kdramas and Cdramas are not available in Netflix Europe. I’ve heard that Netflix US offers the most complete/wide range playlist though, so it‘s new news to me that many Kdramas/Cdramas are also not available in US. I don‘t know if this is due to licensing thing or because if they offer a foreign drama/film then they must dubbed it in local language or provide the local language subtitles at least, so because it cost more money, they only did it for selected dramas they feel will hit it big in this regions.  The people in the country I live in are used to watch dubbed film and find subtitles distracting or tiring, while I find subtitles are so much better and hearing dubbed voices in other language not matching the actors visual is so jarring for me. I feel so cheated paying for Netflix and still have to rely on not so legal sites or youtube to be able to watch the dramas I‘m interested in or paying another fee for vikii  =(

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am sorry for this long post in this lovely, fun thread but it is easier to quote here and discuss.

I am still debating whether Jing truly lacked the means to solve his family situation or if he refrained from decisive action due to his dynamic with XY. I am strongly inclined to believe the latter. In addition to the point I mentioned from chapter 16, XY herself mentioned how Jing wouldn’t be the person she liked if he acted against his family. XY attributed that to Jing’s kindness. However, I think that this is her desire for a weak man. Jing probably understood this well after being with her for many years. These points coupled with the fact that Jing is no ordinary man but a clan leader who is running the largest business network in Dahung made me believe that Jing’s apparent weakness might actually be their dynamic rather than him being ineffective and having no means to solve his family situation.

This raises the question: wouldn’t Jing jeopardize his relationship with XY by being passive about his family problem? However, if you think about it, despite the fact that FFB was around, XY still kept her relationship with Jing until FFY’s pregnancy incident happened. Whenever an issue arose, Jing would appear in a pitiful state, standing in the rain, etc., and they would reconcile. I saw some people also wondering why XY agreed to be Jing’ s side chick. This all means that Jing's approach worked in his favor. After his marriage with FFY happened, XY was still unmarried and was technically available. However, the moment she was about to get married Jing mobilized FFB to ruin the wedding. All these made me believe that rather than being incapable, Jing acted weak to preserve his dynamic with XY.

I agree with this. I agree he is physically weak and also unable to live without XY. In fact I think it is this same reason why he puts up an act in front of XY even when he might have the capability to solve his own problems. I think he is so broken inside to the point that XY is the sole reason for his existence. This is a big, alarming flag, but tbh, I sympathize with all the characters in the novel and don’t feel comfortable in using the word sinister for Jing. I think he is a very broken person. His relationship with XY is an extremely unhealthy one that is debilitating not just for XY but for himself as well.
