Quantcast

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for modern dramas where a girl disguises herself as a boy. I’ve already watched most of the well-known ones, so I’m hoping to discover some lesser-known or hidden gems.

I’m mainly looking for dramas from:

  • Japan

  • South Korea

  • China

  • Taiwan

And preferably modern settings (school, university, workplace, etc.), not historical.

Republican era is fine though

Some examples I’ve already seen:
Coffee Prince, Bromance, To the Beautiful You, Hana Kimi versions, You're Beautiful.... etc.

If you know any others (even obscure web dramas or mini dramas), I’d really appreciate the recommendations!

Thank you in advance 😊

I know of a fantastic Thai one. She's not disguised as a boy the entire time. Are you interested?

Going to put it under a spoiler tag though, because it's a bit of a surprise Bussaba Lui Fai

Thanks for the suggestion, Elsiheva<3

I’ll check it out, sounds interesting already. Even if the disguise isn’t the whole time, that trope is always fun to watch. Appreciate you sharing it!

I’ve already watched Go Big in This High-Stakes Game, but the others look interesting. I actually found a couple of promising ones from here, so I’ll definitely be checking some of these out. Appreciate the recommendations!

You're welcome Thanu. I think you'll like it for other reasons as well too. It's one of my very favourites <3

Let me know if you do watch it, I'd love to have someone to talk about it with.

Thanks for the recommendation, Blueminn. I haven’t seen Arsenal Military Academy yet, but it sounds interesting. I’ll definitely add it to my watchlist.

It's my favorite Xu Kai/Bai Lu pairing.

The only one not previously mention (that I've watched) is a vertically filmed is Gang Girl Goes to Boys High School, an iQIYI Short. The other ones I've seen are all historical.

Just added to my PTW !

Snow Lotus wasn't my favourite, but it's very short so not a big time commitment.

I watched snow lotus already, I'll check out the other ones.

There are two Hong Kong films of yore that I vouch for: He's a Woman, She's a Man (1994) and its sequel: Who's the Woman, Who's the Man? (1996). It's the first one that I rewatch, but they're both lovely. Recording industry setting, both ahead of their time in their treatment of sexuality. This song, from He's a Woman, She's a Man, won best original song at Hong Kong Film Awards. The scenes in the video are from the movie, but only the ML, played by Leslie Cheung, appears. Here's the FL:
