Description of themes in the show:
Female lead is a general, male lead is a minor prince and a bit of a weakling and known for being pretty (not manly). They are forced together in a political marriage so the emperor maintains power within his family.
There's comedy surrounding expectations of what a man and woman is in the time period. They learn to love each other for who they are instead of what is expected of them.
There is also a politics and plotting surrounding the world they live in and control of the throne such as another empire that wants to conquer their empire. So they're not targets of the plot directly but they get involved, sometimes they are targets of subplots.
I just really liked the female lead, the mix of comedy, role-reversal for the time period, the tension between the couple turning into love as they understand and appreciate each other and the story of the empire and what's going on all meshing together.
Anyone got any recommendations? I tend to put up a variation of this question every year or two to see if anything new has appeared. Unfortunately busy at work especially now with COVID-19.
