Quantcast

Just watched the Princess of Nanling King, and am looking for something similar.  In Princess of Nanling King, the ML is an emperor and forces the FL to stay with him as her concubine.  For most of the drama, the FL is totally oblivious to the fact that the ML is hopelessly in love with her.  She does her best to get away from him, but near the end of the drama she falls in love.  However, for most of the drama, the affection is one sided.

Another similar drama is Empress Ki.  For the first third of the drama or so, the FL hates the ML, but he loves her.

  • The King's Woman - Very similar to the plot you described. However, it has a tragic ending.
  • Princess Agents
  • I Need Romance 3 - Despite what the first few episodes suggest, the FL's dislike for the ML comes out as soon as his identity is revealed.
  • Story of Yanxi Palace - The ML is in denial about his feelings for a while and rather than trying to get away from the ML the FL uses him and his feelings - the dynamic is more like Empress Ki.
  • The Legends - The FL saves the ML and they are friendly at first, then she mostly forgets about him, then she hates him and wants to kill him, and eventually she falls for him, while the ML is in love from her from the beginning.
  • Before We Get Married
  • About Time - But the ML dies before the FL understands his feelings. The dynamic is a little bit like Empress Ki but probably not exactly what you're looking for.

Thanks very much.  Loved the Legends.   I'll check out the King's Woman because the lead is handsome =)

Thanks!  Was Neung Nai Suang any good?  I've noticed that Thai dramas use this trope a lot.

Well, I liked it because it had some nice relationships between characters and music and love to hate relationships are my guilty pleasure...But different people have different taste so... But in my opinion it's one of the better lakorns! You can try first episode and see if you like it...it's also not that long compared to other Thai dramas.

I will.  Thanks for the suggestion!

Korean
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo- FL and ML hate each other at the beginning but later on they learn to tolerate one another. ML eventually falls for her but she doesn't reciprocate and things get messy from there on.

Thailand
Leh Ratree- FL does hate the ML

China
Scarlet Heart- Same as Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo
Cruel Romance- FL hates the ML and it takes her a long time to return his feelings.

Japan
5-ji Kara 9-ji Made- FL  finds the ML annoying and bothersome at first, and after awhile you can see that she slowly starts to resent him.

Thanks very much! I'll check out Leh Rahtree and Cruel Romance.  Seen Moon Lovers (Korean version) already.

Just poking my nose in here, but did you really enjoy Princess of Lanling King? I've been debating watching it for forever.

Some suggestions I have for this kind of trope are:

Thanks for the suggestions.   Thai and Turkish dramas seem to have this a lot.  Adini Feriha Koydum is another Turkish drama with this theme.   I like Wallace Chung (I'm fascinated by how different he looks in certain dramas, the guy goes from super tan to  ivory depending on the drama), so I'll check out General and I.

I liked Princess of Lanling King, but it's no masterpiece.  It's more like a guilty pleasure (like Boys Over Flowers), and it gets repetitive.  The FL is generally fine but she's quite squeaky at times, which gets on my nerves.  And there is this one scene where the two MLs essentially decide among themselves who the FL will stay with, which made me so angry.  Like, she can choose herself.  She's not an object that someone can hand over to another person.  The ML is possessive and doesn't understand boundaries, which I would absolutely hate in real life, but it's fun for me when it shows up in dramas- esp if the FL fights back and doesn't just allow herself to be bullied.  The dramas that I don't enjoy are the ones in which the FL just gives in to whatever the ML wants.

I'll have to give Adini Feriha Koydum a try! I've seen a ton of Turkish dramas and find I wish there were even more available online with english subtitles. I love seeing the culture from that country in the dramas as well. & yes Thai & Turkish do seem to share this trope for sure ^_^

I think I will give Princess of Lanling King a go. (I hesitated mostly because it isn't straight historical and seemed to have fantasy? elements) I am right there with you loving my dramas to have that possessive/intrusive ML but would shudder in horror if it were real life. HA. Seems like we share some of the same drama interests. :D
