The drama is actually much better than the book (because the book is very short). And it doesn't develop the characters completely, the ML was perfectly developed in the drama (because in the book it was a little incomplete). The FL in the book has development, but.....the drama managed to bring much more nuances. This drama is a mix of humor, philosophy, romance, fantasy and even psychology.

I get that the drama characters are more fleshed out to fit the elongated length and for television format as it is not like a book where a character can described in a few words.

However, I found the change in setting to introduce typical xianxia elements e.g., with a council of elders, ML's tortured background, mistrust between the leads etc. made the ML and FL a bit more cliche - losing the uniqueness they had in the short novel. I liked that the relationship was very nontraditional in the novel and while the drama has fully developed character arcs for both the ML and FL, I just found it not as good as the novel.

I am not saying the drama is bad - it is good in its own right - just that my personal preference is the novel setting with characters that we don't often see in Cdramas. This comes from a decade of watching dramas and reading webnovels and so, I guess, I just prefer to find something new and extra.

I found the novel to be very short, without developing the story completely. If we look closely, the focus of the novel is Hannu's trauma, the imprisonment of Tai He's body, and Jin Tan Yin's comings and goings, while Yuan Zhong had practically no story. He just waited for her, anguishing over whether she would come or not. The drama brought a whole new context to Yuan Zhong's story, making it more interesting. They brought the "fox priest" to life. And Jin Tan Yin stopped being just someone who came to earth to wait for Yuan Zhong to die and stay with him for just the necessary time of his life. JTY had to fight for Yuan Zhong the person, for his character as a person (she saw in him what he really was, and that the circumstances wanted to distort). This was beautiful to see. While JTY was really defined in the drama as a goddess with the ability to fight for a person's destiny (and through him, for other people). Throughout the plot, she shows her powers in various uses in different situations. And the best thing is that she uses this power with her greatest power: compassion, but without being stupid, she is determined, she faces different people in different situations. Yuan Zhong is strong and is important within the story, even accompanied by a strong heroine (and who has his destiny in her hands). The ending is him deciding to be a god or not (I thought it was phenomenal), with all the sense in the story. And the ending (contrary to what I thought), even JTY saying goodbye, but saying she will return, (made me have the feeling that this will really happen). The ending gave me this feeling.

The fact that it took me more than a month to finish this says it all. The plot was so so so so boring . Watched in 2x speed still does not feel fast enough. The chemistry between leads nada. The romance was lackluster. Fighting scene was good imo. OST just good enough. Just another disappointing drama that I anticipated prior to its airing 🥲. My rating: 6.5/10.

  I don't agree with you. She dies, but later she shows all her strength. The fate of the ML is in her hands the whole time, and yet, the ML has strength in the drama. (Their love story is much more intimate, it is in the fidelity of this love, in this fight for the integrity of his heart. And that is beautiful to see.) This drama is a treasure, a gem, a poetry in the form of drama. The stage of consciousness has that existential confrontation and demonstrates the love, and the mutual knowledge between the two. (It's a shame that you can't understand. I don't skip ANYTHING. I watch the drama at its normal pace, so as not to miss ANYTHING.)

If you can't accept negativity about something you enjoyed that's your problem alone.

    @RhopalocerA I just wanted to make sure that my opinion was clearly visible here as well, to show that others may come to see it as I do (and not necessarily as you think). This way, the framework for analysis becomes better. It would be too limited and restricted to only show how you see the drama. It is good for the two opinions to be side by side. (And for others to analyze, see the drama and choose which opinion fits best with what each one thinks.)
  • People tend to be very influenced by opinions without even trying to see for themselves, and simply give up on the drama at the first opinion they find. (Both opinions side by side is much better).
