Jing Yuan and Xing Yue backstory is not similar/same as Tian Qi and Yuemi in ALP. So you can really treat Moonlight Mystique as a standalone.
While I did like Tian Qi and Yuemi's backstory in ALP, I have come to really love Jing Yuan and Xing Yue as a pairing and their backstory in Moonlight Mystique (as a standalone).
And because I love Jing Yuan and Xing Yue as a pairing, I just want to shed some light (from my perspective) on how I tried to cope with their ending.
The below will contain spoilers, so if you don't want spoilers, then feel free to exit out this thread.
*** SPOILERS BELOW ***
Jing Yuan and Xing Yue have a bittersweet ending. Jing Yuan loves Xing Yue and he did said he desperately want to see Xing Yue again.
At first Jing Yuan saw Bai Shuo is Xing Yue because she carried Xing Yue's divine mark, but didn't want to admit that Bai Shuo is not Xing Yue since Xing Yue is dead and its too painful for him to accept this fact.
Bai Shuo is Xing Yue's reincarnation and Bai Shuo is herself. She's not going to be Xing Yue because she's not.
How Jing Yuan was able to awaken after 60,000 years later into Fan Yue's body was because he used his Divine Power(which can be like a part of his soul) to bind the hidden heart back then so a part of his remnants still exists in this world that was binded to the Hidden Heart. When Bai Shuo used the sword to attack Zhen Yu and injured the Hidden Heart, this sets Jing Yuan free where he was able to enter into Fan Yue's body and awaken as Jing Yuan.
For me, Jing Yuan and Xing Yue back story is truly tragic. They wouldn't have gotten that tragic ending back then if Heaven Fate(Tian Dao) didn't forbid Xing Yue from being with Jing Yuan. But honestly, without the tragic backstory, there would not be the Fan Yue and Bai Shuo that we came to love.
I know it hurts Jing Yuan to accept that Bai Shuo is Bai Shuo and she's not Xing Yue anymore. Because that is him acknowledging that Xing Yue is no longer in this world.
Jing Yuan truly loves Xing Yue and just like how Bai Shuo cannot take Jing Yuan the same as Fan Yue(because Bai Shuo only loves Fan Yue), the same is with Jing Yuan because he only loves Xing Yue. He accepted they are two different people.
The moment he accepted that Xing Yue is no longer in this world, my heart 💔 goes out to him, because that's when he decides to join her(Xing Yue) in the stars. I like to believe that he did find her again(as we can see the two stars join together) and they have reunited in the stars. Jing Yuan was selfless when he decide to give the body back to Fan Yue and that did make me love Jing Yuan better too 😭😭
In the overall, how I took the theme to their backstory and ending is, Fan Yue and Bai Shuo are reincarnations to both Jing Yuan and Xing Yue, and they lived on as their happy ending. Just like what Jing Yuan said to Fan Yue before he joins Xing Yue in the stars: that perhaps his awakening(60,000 years later) was to give them(Fan Yue and Bai Shuo) a chance to be together. He told Fan Yue to protect Bai Shuo well and don't let their(Jing Yuan and Xing Yue) regrets in the past repeat itself 😭😭 so to me, this is how I saw it... To say I am not sad would be a lie, because I was sad in that scene, but when I look at this in another sense/perspective, their ending gives a sense of bittersweet where their happy ending lives on in their next life(as Fan Yue and Bai Shuo) it actually makes sense if you look at reincarnation side of things. I felt like how the writers wrote this was very poetic and sad, yet beautiful in a way, that the love they held for the one they love is irreplaceable. We saw this through Fan Yue, Bai Shuo and Jing Yuan.
So in the end, does this make me dislike Fan Yue and Bai Shuo? No. Because Fan Yue and Bai Shuo deserves their happy ending too and considering all their suffering and sacrifices they earned it and I am glad one way or another Jing Yuan and Xing Yue can live on in Fan Yue and Bai Shuo in that sense(in the next life).
Very well written and I personally love how Jing Yuan and Xing Yue had their own endings, while not a trully happy one but we all know that their HE has manifested with Supreme Deities Fan Yue and Bai Shuo. Even Heaven gave this HE to Bai Shuo as making up for the past mistake of making Xing Yue heartless and forbidden to love.
Thank you so much for writing this up! I've been feeling so sad over the ending of Jingyuan and Xingyue's story. It's just so tragic! I wish we could have spent a little longer on their story or see them reunite to get some closure. It's better to think that they both reunited together in the stars.
@yii, You're welcome, I mean I understand how you feel since I feel the same too (before all this)
If you see the episode again, it showed the two stars join together, so to me they have reunited in the stars. That is the only way Jing Yuan can be happy because I think it would be even more sad if Jing Yuan see Bai Shuo as Xing Yue when she is no longer Xing Yue.
It really adds to the sense that who they fell in love with is not the outer appearance but their personality which defines who they are. The one Jing Yuan love is Xing Yue, and the one Bai Shuo love is Fan Yue, as you can see when she have that talk with Tian Huo.
Ngl, I did cry in the Jing Yuan scene before he leave but at the same time it really made me appreciate the writing in that sense that who they love is irreplaceable and I think it would be sad if Bai Shuo force herself to accept Jing Yuan when Jing Yuan is his own self if that makes sense.
This is different to the Qing Mu and Houchi situation in ALP. In ALP, I felt sad when Qing Mu and Houchi is gone but they are still a part of both Bai Jue and Shang Gu and have lived on through Bai Jue and Shang Gu. Likewise in MM, since both Fan Yue and Bai Shuo are reincarnation to both Jing Yuan and Xing Yue, I saw that Jing Yuan and Xing Yue past self got their reunion in the stars and Fan Yue and Bai Shuo got their happy ending carrying a part of Jing Yuan and Xing Yue in them. So it lives on (if that makes sense)
You explained MM eloquently but there is no need to connect any characters from MM back to ALP. MM is not only a "standalone story" but there are no characters from ALP in it, just because his name is Jing Yuan and he has a demon title and tragic love story, doesn't make him the same character in ALP.

Thanks, and yeah there is no need to connect back to ALP and that is why I said in the first paragraph it is better to treat this as a standalone since they're not connected to ALP at all.
Honestly, I had the same ideology behind their story. The only thing which I refuse to believe is that Fan Yue and Bai Shuo are the reincarnations of Jing Yuan and Xing Yue. The stars meeting in the sky was kind of a symbolism that they are not really the 'reincarnations' but maybe it's only because they share the same face and the same divine mantles.
Anyways! I love Jing Yuan and Xing Yue's story too. I feel the reason for their separation was communication, which is a huge part of Fan Yue and Bai Shuo's story. They never communicated with each other. I kinda didn't like how Xing Yue always chose to hurt him when she could've asked for his assistance(?!). She knew both Jing Yuan and Mo Li were equal in power and with her divine bow, Jing Yuan and her stand would've become more powerful. But no! She didn't. I kinda felt it weird how she was ready to sacrifice herself for the world's well being but as a Goddess, she did the most cliche move which usual humans would — sacrifice and not let your man know. Whereas Bai Shuo seems better. I strongly believe she wouldn't have left Fan Yue hanging mid air and gone to attack Mo Li, if Fan Yue had not been that hurt. Also, she did plan out the things with Jing Yuan and Fan Yue making it crystal clear who her next target is and seeked their help.
I love Jing Yuan. Even after being hurt, he didn't stop loving her. He wanted to seek revenge but it was more about how he wanted her to end the pain. I love the scene where he gets angry when she easily agrees to surrender and marry him. It showcased his love perfectly — he loved her, and respected her.
I felt bad when Jing Yuan decided to end his life so that Fan Yue and Bai Shuo can complete their love story. All he wanted was to see her happy — even if she was not his Xing Yue, her face and Xing Yue's divine mantle were enough for him to show compassion/mercy/kindness to her. And maybe that's also the reason why Bai Shuo, although happy about Fan Yue's return asks if Jing Yuan would ever find his love again. I love how both the couples of the drama are different and similar in their own way.
While watching Fan Yue and Bai Shuo's wedding scene in the epilogue, I knew Jing Yuan and Xing Yue would be so proud of them for completing what they couldn't 🥹
Ending the rant with my favorite dialogue of Fan Yue
"(For Jing Yuan)Among the eternal dazzling stars, none of them are her (Xing Yue) yet all of them are her"
@moonstique, what you said about Xing Yue is also how I feel about her as well, like I felt like all this hurt will be avoided if she was honest with him about the whole situation. But I get it. It's because of that regret in her past that lead to us having a better version of Bai Shuo in this lifetime how she and Fan Yue have this communication that avoids any misunderstanding. And I love how Bai Shuo made Fan Yue promised her that no matter what will happen in the future they will go through this together etc. We also have Fan Yue said to Bai Shuo that when she gathered all the contemplation, she will become stronger later but no matter what happens all he wanted was for her to be free and happy. This is like a contrast and parallel from their past self that stems deeply into their "soul" in this life time to be better versions of themselves in this lifetime.
Honestly for me I saw it as reincarnation. I even made another topic thread in here about this https://kisskh.at/discussions/738079-zhu-yue/135118-reincarnation-explained-moonlight-mystique-jing-yuan-fan-yue-xing-yue-bai-shuo if you're interested to reading. I can't explain it anymore clearer than this but this is my views. But to put in this sense, in each life time when you die, a part of you in that lifetime will become the "stars"(because that life in the past has ended when you die) and your soul(in this case will be their Divine Mantle") will enter the reincarnation cycle where your life is renewed and you will be your own self based on the life experiences in that lifetime. But despite so you may still carry some traits and qualities from your previous life. To me both Jing Yuan and Fan Yue share the same traits and qualities in terms of their character personality but Bai Shuo is a huge contrast to who she was in her past as Xing Yue.
I felt like it was because of her past regrets that stems into her deeply that in this lifetime she doesnt want to repeat the same mistakes. She said she wanted to be herself in this lifetime and not carry the burden of protecting the three realms, she just wants to protect those she holds dear to her and walk freely on her path that she has chosen. She doesn't like it when others dictates or makes decisions for her, all these are qualities i felt wouldn't have made her "Bai Shuo" if her past wasn't Xing Yue if that makes sense.
So in the end, I love Bai Shuo more in terms of this comparison but I don't dislike Xing Yue, I mean she have flaws sure but she just couldn't freely express her feelings because of what happened to Jing Yuan when Heaven intervene with their love and killed him the first time. I felt sorry for her to some extent . I felt like it is because we have Xing Yue and Jing Yuan past love is why we have Fan Yue and Bai Shuo in this life. Like what Fan Yue said:
"That's all in the past. This time, we've met again, not as Xing Yue and Jing Yuan, but as Bai Shuo and Fan Yue. In my heart, you're the best Bai Shuo, the only one in this world, and is irreplaceable". This tells me they are reincarnations to both Jing Yuan and Fan Yue and I personally took it as this because to me they are and both Jing Yuan and Xing Yue did live on happily together freely in their next life as Fan Yue and Bai Shuo in that sense. This is how I see it.
But what you said there about Jing Yuan is also why I love him too. I love him so much that even when he was so hopelessly and desperately in love with Xing Yue I just wanted to give him a hug. It hurts even more when he knew it was only a dream that she trapped him in but he is okay to be in this dream because he wanted to be with Xing Yue 😭😭
@ KiKo Tsukino thank you for explaining it better! I didn't know about the soul being referred to as the 'divine mantle'. I thought it referred to their essence/power or something like that. I think now it does make sense why they are referred as the reincarnations.
Honestly, even I don't dislike Xing Yue but there's no doubt that Bai Shuo is better. And I also appreciate how Bai Shuo sticked to her present identity. I love how both FY and BS didn't depend on their past and were always true to their present personalities. Definitely one of the major reasons I love this drama🥹

Glad I was able to shed some light for you here.
Yeah to me I don't dislike Xing Yue. But I do love Bai Shuo better.
As for both Jing Yuan and Fan Yue, I love them both equally.
I also love that about both Fan Yue and Bai Shuo just wants to live their life in their present self since this is who they are but it doesn't change who they were in the past. It is also because of Bai Shuo not returning to being Xing Yue is why she had this 6th contemplation of great love that changed Heaven's way and proved her wrong. This is one of the main reasons why I love this drama because Bai Shuo had proved Heaven wrong back then. She didn't walk the same path as Xing Yue but ultimately she did killed the Hidden Heart once in for all through this 6th contemplation and saved all those she holds dear.
I have also expressed how I feel about this in the reincarnation thread in here that I appreciate that both Fan Yue and Bai Shuo lives on in their present self because it gave them the freedom to love and live on happily at the end without all that burden. MM is truly romantic in my eyes and a touching love story between past vs present.
