25 for 25

In 2025 I decide to watch 25 dramas from the last 25 yearsdespite going against my own sanity. Can I say any of these dramas are my favorites? No. Did some exhaust the hell out of me? Absolutely. Do I need a loooong break from melodramas? Hell yes, lol. Still not sure how I watched six series in the last two months alone, lol.

  • Autumn in My Heart

    1. Autumn in My Heart

    Korean Drama - 2000, 16 episodes

    5.5

This was just full on ridiculous, and just depressing for no damn reason. No one was happy, and every single character needed serious therapy of some sort. Then again, this was pretty clear it was going to bad since the way the backstory was presented was pretty awful. At least the episodes where paced pretty well. But this was just a full on no.

  • Hotelier

    2. Hotelier

    Korean Drama - 2001, 20 episodes

    6.0

I might have liked this if I had paid a bit more attention while watching, but I think I got most of the plot points. Overall okay, and a bit forgettable.

  • Shoot for the Stars

    3. Shoot for the Stars

    Korean Drama - 2002, 16 episodes

    6.5

At times this drama felt more like it was a lot older then it was. The plot was alright, and at times it was running in circles despite it going quickly, but the 'star' here was the chemistry between the leads, and So In Sung was by far the babiest of all the early 00' MLs.

  • Something about 1%

    4. Something about 1%

    Korean Drama - 2003, 26 episodes

    6.0

This wasn't awful, but it was missing a spark, and got pretty draggy towards the end especially as they started introducing other plot lines to secondary characters, and like the first half was filled with red flag teacher and dulu girl. Other then that some of the acting was just pain bad, and I had a hard time getting around some cultural things, such as Hyeon Jin needing to go back there, when I feel like she had enough justification to let them out of her life, and Da Hyeon's parents were a bit contoring.

  • I'm Sorry, I Love You

    5. I'm Sorry, I Love You

    Korean Drama - 2004, 16 episodes

    5.5

I don't even know what to say about this. It's just full on ridiculous. I couldn't connect to any of these characters, and they all kind of sucked in very different ways. I don't know maybe I just hate melodramas, but I wasn't feeling anything here. Am I meant to be sad? No I'm just kind of bored of ml acting like a thug, the SML just being a brat and the FL just swatting everywhere like she's on the verge of dying over those two dumb idiots. There is a half assed revenge plot (I don't think he even knew what he was doing, and that ending ... probably meant to be tragic, but at that point I was so exhausted by the drama I could really care less.

  • My Lovely Sam Soon

    6. My Lovely Sam Soon

    Korean Drama - 2005, 16 episodes

    5.5

    Babies. Everyone is so young.

But seriously, this show did not age well, and by that I mean the writing, and characters. Not the actors, who, have DEFINITELY aged well, especially Daniel Henney, but I'm getting off track, lol. Hyun Bins character is the actual worst, I'm finding it really hard to like him, especially after episode 7, after he actually slapped a woman.  He got himself beat up a lot, and he deserved most of them. Between him being a controlling asshole, his angry management problems, trying to date two women at once, the list goes on. At least Sam Soon tried to hold her own... sometimes.... but it came off as her settling. She could do better. The SFL could do better, but I guess she probably did. In a way I did kind of like the scenes between the second leads, but they had their own vibe that didn't always fit. More like a indie film.

  • Spring Waltz

    7. Spring Waltz

    Korean Drama - 2006, 20 episodes

    6.5

This was actually one of the first entries on my dramas to watch list, I found it on a recommended list from a Korean America author (can't remember who thou), but maybe I missed my timing with this, but I really only found it okay. It wasn't so much the plot (although parts of it are a bit unbelievable and probably would be considered kidnapping but anyways....),  I think the problem was with the characters. The female lead was kind of bland but the delu second female made it a bit unbearable, I guess  if you are friends with someone 15 years ago you own the male lead, and get to act like a jealous girlfriend and throw fits all the time. Like I can at least understand why the leads have the connection they do. Philip was a bit of a stalker tbh, but he was never trying to force his feelings on anyone and was the voice of reason. Even if  Daniel Henney's acting wasn't consistent and his dialogue kind of awkward. I also kind of got annoyed with everyone blaming everything on the ML, like he actually went through some trauma as a child, because he honestly couldn't consented to what he did as a child.

  • Hello! My Lady

    8. Hello! My Lady

    Korean Drama - 2007, 16 episodes

    6.0

This wasn't bad, but I had a hard time focusing on the earlier episodes, and the later episodes just made me want to skip through them because so many characters were just freaking annoying, including the elders. but especially the lying cousin, and that other girl who was acting like a brat for whatever reason, I'm not sure. I'm also just glad I didn't grow up in a traditional setting like this because I would have lost it at someone at some point. I guess,  the ML wasn't a jerk? I don't know, this probably isn't going to make a lasting impression.

  • The World That They Live In

    9. The World That They Live In

    Korean Drama - 2008, 16 episodes

    5.5

If the point of this drama was to show that working on a drama set sucks, then I guess its hit itself on the nail. If it's to be a mature slice of life drama it's failed. Lethal combination of pride and anger management issues. In every episode I've watched so far someone is throwing something, yelling at something, or hitting someone, and then sometimes they act like it was just common place.  So it was really hard to get in to this, since almost every character can be extremely unlikeable most of the time, especially Soo Kyung, played by Choi Daniel, I could not stand that guy, and I wonder why he never got fired at all.  This just dragged on and it took me forever to slug through it.

  • City Hall

    10. City Hall

    Korean Drama - 2009, 20 episodes

    6.5

This took me some time to get into, and sometimes I still felt it was kind of boring. Also the romance wasn't really vibing with me, and the male lead could be kind of jerk in this regard, so it was hard to route for them while he was still engaged. I liked having a politic drama that had someone who wasn't in the role for power or greed but because they were generally out to help, but the female lead was hard to like in the beginning she was being so cringely.

  • Marry Me, Mary!

    11. Marry Me, Mary!

    Korean Drama - 2010, 16 episodes

    6.0

This did bring the older drama feels I was looking for, but it was crazy frustrating and I really felt bad for the female lead. Her dad was complete trash (he pretty much sold her off to his friends son despite very clearly telling him she doesn't want to get married) and there she was apologizing to him all the time like she was in the wrong. There were a few times were I thought she'd finally tell him off but she never does despite being so clearly miserable. Honestly, all the parents in this drama are awful and don't give a crap about their kids and honestly none of them apologize. At least the ML isn't a coward, the second lead certainly is despite seeming so confident work wise.  I guess the leads are cute together and Jang Geun Suk's voice is nice.

  • Heartstrings

    12. Heartstrings

    Korean Drama - 2011, 15 episodes

    6.5

I just wasn't feeling this. It wasn't awful but pretty bland most of the time. The male lead just wasn't that charismatic, and his crush on the teacher at the beginning was just annoying (especially how she was handing it) maybe not as annoying as Hui Ju. This girl never once apologized even after she knew what her mom was up too (corruption to max, even framing people to get her way), no wonder why she didn't have any friends. All that took up too much of the narrative and I was getting over it. Park Shin Hye was okay here, but she's improved over the years. Overall this could be wrapped up with "meh."

  • Reply 1997

    13. Reply 1997

    Korean Drama - 2012, 16 episodes

    6.0

Someone said this was a love letter to the 90s, but they must being talking about the embrassing part of the 90s. I get that they were teenagers but the fangirling was getting kind of clingey, and some episodes didn't really seem to have a point, or at least didn't flow nicely. Also what kind of a grown ass man is that condifent in the fact he's dating a high school girl. No. Thankfuly the episodes were short.

  • Secret Love

    14. Secret Love

    Korean Drama - 2013, 16 episodes

    5.5

This was really not for me. I get that the female lead loved the guy, but no. Girl, no. And the ML is kind of crazy. You know I'm not terribly upset with the lack of toxic ML's these days. But I do like the SML's slow decent due to his guilt, although his acting at times isn't that great. Maybe it wasn't as bad because I wrote in off in the beginning. I do like that FL did regain her agency as the story went on.

  • Doctor Stranger

    15. Doctor Stranger

    Korean Drama - 2014, 20 episodes

    5.5

This show is probably one of the most ridiculous ones I've watched in awhile. I stopped trying to take it seriously when Park Hoon walked into the OR of a hospital he didn't work at and that no one knew him at and started a operation and no one stopped him. Or when a patient collapsed and a doctor needed to be reminded to stat CPR. Or when they kept claiming that they need to save the babies but were paying games and hospital politics by switching doctors around right before a surgery. Everytime they tried the 'I'm doing this to make this place the best, I started laughing. I could write paragraphs about how awful this hospital is, in a way it feels a lot like a bad American medical drama.

Not that the rest of the drama was any better. Like Ji Se Yeon was giving nothing so how am I supposed to believe this great love between the two of them, and the ML was obsessed to the point of not thinking straight. I agree with the comments thinking Oh Soo Hyun was the FL when apparently she wasn't, but she should have been. Her character was at least more interesting. I really couldn't care about the South Korea - North Korea spying, because honestly what was the point of it. Oh and the Chairman can fall in a ditch and roll into a river and wash up on shore in North Korea since he likes to send people there so badly.

  • The Scholar Who Walks the Night

    16. The Scholar Who Walks the Night

    Korean Drama - 2015, 20 episodes

    7.0

I needed some spooky vibes so... vampires. A little cheesy but pretty fun.  No wonder Lee Soo Hyuk gets (or rather they want to) type cast him. He was one of the brighter spots in the drama. However, it did get draggy and the female lead just seems too childish compared to the male lead so I wasn't really feeling the romance here.

  • Moorim School

    17. Moorim School

    Korean Drama - 2016, 16 episodes

    6.0

I wasn't mad at this, but I don't quite get what vibe it was supposed to be. Like this secret school, but they only really taught ethics and martial arts, but somehow some people had superpowers because of some ancient thing? I don't know.

  • Jugglers

    18. Jugglers

    Korean Drama - 2017, 16 episodes

    6.5

Nothing groundbreaking just a cute rom com if not for some of the boring office stuff. Also kind of forgettable.

  • Lawless Lawyer

    19. Lawless Lawyer

    Korean Drama - 2018, 16 episodes

    6.5

This was interesting but I'll be honest it'll probably end up on my forgettable list. Don't get me wrong Bong Sang Pil (Lee Joon Gil played him well) is charming as hell, and Jae Yi had her own stuff going on that didn't always involve around the male lead (it's hard to find those female leads sometimes), but the plot got a bit draggy for my tastes especially since we knew who the bad guys were pretty quickly. Cha Moon Sook was a good villain but Ah Oh Joon was a bit too cartoonish.

  • The Crowned Clown

    20. The Crowned Clown

    Korean Drama - 2019, 16 episodes

    7.5

It took me a bit to get into this, and honestly the plot wasn't that exciting especially for someone who isn't a huge fan of place power plays, but man the performances of Yeo Gin Goo and Kim Sang Kyung (especially a scene at the end of episode eight), along with this cast made up for a lot of it.

  • Flower of Evil

    21. Flower of Evil

    Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes

    7.0

This took me forever to watch, much longer then most dramas I've been watching. I know it's regarded as a masterpiece by some but I just found it alright. Don't get me wrong the acting is top notch especially from the leads and Kim Ji Hoon, and I enjoyed the relationship of the leads, and Ji Won's unwavering love. But it was predictable, and I figured out the ml between quickly, so I wished they pushed the 'is he a psychopath or not' further into the series.

  • One the Woman

    22. One the Woman

    Korean Drama - 2021, 16 episodes

    6.5

Just a easy one time watch comedy since the stakes weren't really stakes probably cause it was a bit of parody at the same time. The bad guys were bad, as they were just so obviously bad, and the FL lead just reminded me of her other role so she didn't really feel fresh. The concept was different but just okay at the end.

  • All of Us Are Dead

    23. All of Us Are Dead

    Korean Drama - 2022, 12 episodes

    7.5

This made me more mad (I don't blame the kids for being so angry at the end) then scared at times, the rest of the time it was just your basic zombie survival story, except that the acting and characters were a bit more elevated. I just wish they add more of the politics of the behind the scenes? Like they could mobilize a quarantine center that quickly but only that police officer about the epicenter?

  • Daily Dose of Sunshine

    24. Daily Dose of Sunshine

    Korean Drama - 2023, 12 episodes

    7.0

This is kind of hard for me to judge because I'm not a heath care worker or someone working with mental heath, but sometimes the writing just didn't make sense. While yes, as someone with anxiety, I did recognize myself a bit, but some of the other cases didn't seem resolved, like they were at the beginning of treating these patients not at the end. In that way a episode was too short. Especially when it came to Seo Won, who was such a sweet soul, but the stress of trying to study for a job, to fit in with society had cause him to retreat into a world that didn't exist. They claimed he was better - but he went right back to studying which was the route of the cause, so I would have disagreed with a doctor in this case, that wasn't a good sign of recovery. I know another person commented that the actual Doctors came across as one dimensional, which I had to agree with. Even the lead here, kind of a disorder that came up out of nowhere, that I don't think was handled well. There was a couple here but none of that was fleshed out well.

However Park Bo Young did put on a good performance, and I was glad they addressed the fatigue health care workers and those working and caring for loved ones feel, that taking a moment for yourself is quite necessary. Also I'm glad they addressed the issue of toxic parents - especially in a society of filial piety.

  • Light Shop

    25. Light Shop

    Korean Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    6.5

The first half was kind of weird, and seemingly all over the place, which was I guess, a set up for a 'twist' however, I didn't really find it as twisty, since I kind of figured that was what was going on. If that was the plan - it wasn't really done well, nor was the 'horror/supernatural' element that strong. I might have liked it if they better incorporated the earlier episodes with the second half, and had the 'twist' in the later episodes....  I enjoyed the 'vibes', and yes, some of the stories are kind of heartbreaking, but I don't think I liked this as much as everyone else.
