5. Not Me
Thai Drama - 2021, 14 episodes
an absolutely incredible show that has a deep underlying socio-political theme. it's not merely a gay show, but also discusses a whole manner of topics such as LGBTQ+ rights (with an emphasis on trans rights), same-sex marriage, touches on racism and BLM, and talks about the unfair treatment of disabled people in working environments. it also discusses Rule of Law, human rights, the issue of business monopoly and the corruption of the police.
at the same time, it has some extremely soft and touching scenes. this was the second thai show I had ever watched and I was - and still am - reeling with how incredible it was. this show will forever have a soft spot in my heart.

6. Blueming
Korean Drama - 2022, 11 episodes
good lord this series was incredible. it's raw, it's realistic, it deserves all the fucking praise in the world. Â it's the most raw depiction of slowly falling in love that i have ever seen.
it talks a lot about confidence/self-image issues, and about the beauty standards in korea and how internalised one can make those beauty standards to the point where they can't even realise they they are beautiful, to the point where they reject even the thought of people liking them because they don't see themselves as likable.

7. Viva La Vida
Chinese Movie - 2024
oh god I cried so hard. I kept laughing one minute and then crying the next and then laughing and then sobbing again. there's no inbetween! you feel every emotion all at once. this film was absolutely breathtaking. they rocked the sun awake in the end <3

-
9. Kimi to Nara Koi wo Shite Mite mo
Japanese Drama - 2023, 5 episodes
this healed all the broken parts of me. I actually really wanted to give it a 10, but seriously, it reminded me of Kimi No Koto Dake Mite Itai in the best way - it's so HEALING, it's so WONDERFUL. they're just two gays, having fun, falling in love. what more could you ask for
-
10. Better Days
Chinese Movie - 2019
I have a lot to say about this film and my heart hurts thinking about it so I shall return to this when I am more emotionally stable.
-
11. The Merciless
Korean Movie - 2017
the ending of this film is fucking BRUTAL in the best way possible. nothing could have prepared me for that, and it was so good but also so bittersweet.
!! spoiler: it's the fact that Hyun Soo has nothing left, nothing - he gave up his life for the police force, his mother was killed because of his involvement, the police ultimately failed him because they only cared about catching the perpetrator - the only thing he has left IS Jae Ho but that is completely eroded when he discovers that Jae Ho is responsible for his mother's death. it's beautifully executed in the most gut-wrenching manner.
in an alternate universe, Jae Ho and Hyun Soo would have been unstoppable. such a fucking good film.

14. Kieta Hatsukoi
Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
bro this is THE comfort show of the century, I cannot say anything else about it. I literally have no words. like this is THE show to watch irrespective of your mood because it is literal perfection. all of the characters are brilliant, issues are resolved in good time, and there's just a softness radiating from it. i love this show so much it's so easygoing and so !!! like warm breeze on a sunny summer's day <3

15. Utsukushii Kare
Japanese Drama - 2021, 6 episodes
honestly a little,,, toxic? at times?? but it works. Hira is self-sacrificial and puts Kiyoi on a pedestal because he has no one but Kiyoi, and Kiyoi isn't treated equally by anyone but Hira. honestly a show of good give-and-take, in my opinion. has the perfect amount of angst to soft scene ratio - and honestly, not all relationships are wholly innocent and cherry blossom-esque. sometimes it's a bit nasty and scattered and messy, and i think this jdr perfectly summarises that.
-
16. Triage
