Role Reversal (RR)

Very RR. ML travels into an alternate universe where the gender roles are reversed. Genuinely THE best matriarchy and role reversal drama I've ever seen. The commitment was impeccable, especially in a modern setting! 

ML surprisingly adapted well to the matriarchy, playing the role of a quirky and innocent boy very well. FL is his boss, the CEO of a tech company, and he becomes her secretary. She's so perfect as the cold playgirl CEO, I love her sm. 

I really love how thorough the matriarchy and role reversal was in the entire world. Like ML's father scolding him for being out late, or ML's sister having marital issues with her overworked househusband, or ML's friend being used as a plaything by rich women.

Very RR. The best historical matriarchy drama I watched. Oh my god, this was scrumptious! ML marries the crown princess but is abandoned by her on their wedding night due to ongoing war. He spends the next 3 years hating her and dealing with prejudice from everyone. Upon returning, FL has to deal with her cute husband constantly trying to get her to divorce him while trying to earn back his affection. 

It's such a thorough role reversal. Literally taking the catty upset wife and making it the husband, and taking the smitten gentleman husband and making it the wife. Absolutely loved it. I also loved how catty and coquettish ML was and how patient and loving FL was. She really adored her hubby and successfully wooed him. Also, the steamy scenes between them were so good?!? That striptease scene lives rent-free in my mind... O-O

The drama also flips all the other characters' gender roles since it takes place in a matriarchy, so there's a lot of coquettish homme fatales and evil women. Sadly, there weren't many good men other than ML, which I thought was a bit of a shame. Also, there were a handful of traditional moments in the drama (like ML being crazy strong fsr), but I can ignore those because it did pretty much everything else so thoroughly!

Very RR. As RR as it seems like it'll be. Talk about omitting to the reversal. We have FL, who's a self-made CEO; she's rich, smart, aloof, mean, and a trainwreck of a woman. Then there's ML, who's a responsible single father and was bullied until being fired from his previous job (he also faced discrimination for taking paternal leave to look after his daughter). He's gentle, tolerant, sensitive, and sweet. He becomes her secretary, and she is not happy about it. She mistreats him a lot at first, but she comes around. 

I liked the details in RR, like FL, very much living like those 'minimalist' men, the 3-in-1 shampoo kinda men with just a couch for decor in their entire apartment, while ML is very put-together and living his best life. It was really giving "a woman's touch" reversal, and I love it. He makes her life better by being in it because he takes care of her. Very wifey of him.

Very RR. FL transmigrates into a scholar's body but becomes a martial artist. She's rowdy, bold, assertive, badass, and also physically strong. She ends up married to the top scholar ML, who's weak, soft-spoken, gentle, and elegant. She teases him a lot for being uptight, and he gets flustered easily. It's such a delight to see this thorough RR throughout the drama. If you want a FL that's physically strong, carries her man on multiple occasions, protects him from bad guys, does the grand romantic gestures, and gets jealous of anyone who comes close to him while he's the embodiment of an elegant mommy BF that looks at her with enamored eyes and loves her attention, then this is for you.

ML especially stood out to me because the combination of weak, soft-spoken, gentle, and elegant is such a rare combo for a ML to have! I almost wish FL looked more masculine so the couple could've been a perfect 10/10, but alas. 

It's also worth noting that though the drama is a comedy, the RR is not played for laughs often. It's actually quite tasteful (with the exception of ML being physically weak being comedic). Also, a rare instance where the leads are 100% comfortable in their role reversal and aren't humiliated or otherwise dissatisfied, even if a little. They're actually thriving.

Very RR. Matriarchy done good. It's by no means perfect, but it's of the better ones I've seen with us actually being able to see all positions of power being occupied by women. Men also actually appear as husbands and fathers! 

Then there's the MCs. ML plays the supporting role to the two FLs. He often needs to be saved, he's protected and cherished, and the FLs do most of the dangerous stuff/scheming without him. One FL is charismatic and reckless, while the other is the calm genius, and ML is the sweet emotional support!!!!! 

There isn't a whole lot of skinship going on, but the RR vibes are defs there. FL always talks about wanting to protect ML and see him happy, hardcore crushing stuff while teasing him because they're 'besties'. I will say the trio was giving more poly vibes, but I love that too, so 10/10

Very RR. I mean, the RR dream, really. Cross-dressing tomboy, masc-presenting FLs (yes, 3 OF THEM) who pursue and woo three cute MLs. ML & FL have the confident, flirty, assertive FL x shy, flustered ML dynamic. She makes all the moves and leaves him blushing. Then the tertiary couple has the cool, somewhat aloof woman with a total cute puppy boyfriend, like omg!!! The dudes are definitely taken aback at being pursued, save for TML, who's so obliviously adorable that he loves it. SO CUTE. Secondary couple seem the least RR so far, but I'll see how it continues

Since it's an alt-universe type deal, all the gender roles are reversed, so FL is a 'cool' douchebag and masculine, while ML is soft, sensitive, and feminine.

Very RR! FL is a CEO, and ML is a model she hired for her company's promotion. She's strong, mature, grounded, and focused on her career, while ML is a smitten, cute, and immature puppy. She's older than him, so the dynamic is also refreshing in a good take on noona romance. She's also quite dominant, enjoying making ML flustered but also just looking out for him in the more casual dom kinda way. Absolutely underrated RR rep <3

Very RR. Very nice RR representation! Matriarchy setting that, though rather nonsensical and shallow, offers some cute RR moments for the leads.  FL is a manager tasked with making something out of ML's inn so they have a boss/employee thing going on (and FL loves to tease ML to no end). FL is absolutely smitten with ML, pursues him, flirts with him, spoils him, etc. Meanwhile, ML is a total feisty tsundere that totally doesn't like her, okay? ML is also a musician by profession

RR. Literally the RR dream!! Had me giggling and kicking my feet!! We have a gangster FL that was a complete mess, abusive towards her husband and son, a drinker, gambler and overall a menace who travels back in time to when her husband and son were alive and she decides to change fate and cherish them. So we get a whole lot of FL trying to win over her husband who's very hesitant of her and holding resentment due to her being abusive in the past but he still loves her so much. And of course their little angel son who's too precious for this world <3

ML is injured for over 1/3 of the drama so he's mostly staying at home taking care of the kid while FL becomes the sole breadwinner in the family. But she also takes care of him due to his injury and oh my god does she go above and beyond for this man and he's taken aback and falling in love with her all over again, poor man. In everything except physically, you have the masculine FL x feminine ML. She's tough, rough, hot-tempered, and cocky, he's reserved, softspoken, nurturing, and kind (and way  way way too forgiving). 

Seriously if you want to see a woman extremely down bad for her precious angel husband and said husband being completely smitten but also trying not to cave in at the very temptation then you need to watch this. 

Also loving the reversal of how the characters speak about FL and ML respectively. It's very good.

Very RR. ML is an innocent merman who recently escaped captivity, and FL is a cool CEO. ML is very naive, childish, and cute, while FL is the more mature and grounded one, taking on the role of his protector (he literally asks her to protect him from the bad guys, and she often assures him throughout the drama that she always will <333). The pacing is extremely fast, so we quickly get a lot of FL spoiling ML, and he kinda becomes like her pretty stay-at-home boyfriend. She protects him and is also pretty possessive of him (in a normal kinda way, dw), like MLs typically are, and ML loves being her pretty boyfriend.

ML starts off kinda mid asf but later grows tf up and they really support each other.

Very RR! Amazing representation of RR (somewhat problematic rep of OTHER things, but that's for another list). ML is sweet, caring, and cutesy, while FL is cold, distant, and rude. Not to mention ML's family are very RR as well, with the mom being rowdy and taking the lead in the relationship while the father mostly looks out for the kids and takes care of them. ML's sister is also more like a typical brother, rude, a bit of a bully, and always picking on her brother, but still being protective of him

Very RR. I mean, ML gets pregnant, enough said. Even before this, FL gives off more masc vibes and throughout the drama she very much has that on-the-fence boyfriend vibe (yes, yes, douchy AFFFF). ML becomes a boyboss and has quite some vulnerable moments which we love. Defs became more emotional and gentle as the drama went on!! Their dynamic is obviously quite RR with her having to look after him cuz he's pregnant.

Very RR. An episodic minidrama about the lives of 5 men living as househusbands in a househusband-exclusive apartment building xD In order from most RR to least RR couples/episodes: 

• Ep 2: Overworked caretaker househusband (+ stay-at-home father). He's on top of everything and so devoted to his family and he's even part of a housewives' club (PEAK masculine behaviour, we love to see it)
• Ep 4: Reserved corporate househusband (+ stay-at-home father). He's extremely diligent in the hosuehold affairs, approaching it like a corporate job which he thinks he wants to go back to only to choose taking care of his family instead (I loved all the characters in this one, tbh, even the wife and the daughter were adorable. My fav ep!).
• Ep 3: Younger influencer househusband. Older woman/younger man AND the wife is kinda more like the manager. He feels like he's being used more like a content farm and less like a husband (this one was adoooorable) 
• Ep 1: The main MC. His story develops even in the later episodes. He's the average type of chill guy who suddenly becomes a househusband and has to learn how to do it, the POV character, if you will. He really comes around and ends up devoted to his new job and we love to see it. 
• Ep 5: This one wasn't RR and that was kinda the point. He's only a househusband until he can finish his studies and he has no intention of being a househusband. He does come around but it really was his wife putting in 80% of the work.

I didn't mention the wives a lot because it's male-focused and ngl the wives were quite lacking in depth but the drama is 2hours total so everyone was kinda lacking a bit in depth, lmao. My favs were Ep 2 & 4

RR. Slight romance. This drama delivered role reversal in both the main relationship and the cases they solve. FL is a strong and badass warrior, the cold and aloof kind while ML is a cute and quirky detective type, very warm and caring. They start off pretty close and ML has an adorable crush on FL and even imagines her wooing him (adorable/10). Due to the nature of their dynamic, FL is ML's protector and saviour, always watching over him and ready to destroy anyone who touches him. This dynamic was so giving, I wish we got more romance. 

As for the cases... We're first introduced to the leads when ML uses himself as bait to get captured as a sacrificial groom (he was dressed as a bride so we even get femboycore, aaaa). The entire case revolves around a series of missing grooms said to have been killed by a vengeful ghost (female, duh). The rest of the cases have some atypical situations like female rulers in a patriarchy, etc.

RR. FL is a CEO, though ML is also from a wealthy family, he's bullied by them and thus isn't well off until later. FL is domineering, cheeky and flirty while ML is calm, gentle and submissive. She takes the lead in their relationship, even 'forcing' him to live with her. For quite a while ML is her stay-at-home husband, doing the household chores while she is the breadwinner. Later on she secures his position in his family's company so she basically builds him up entirely (she also owns his workplace briefly). There's also an adorable scene where she makes another grand gesture to win him back and AUGH!!! my heart. ML does end up saving her a couple of times but FL isn't helpless or childish which is sooo refreshing for these F!CEO dramas.

I will say they fumbled the RR in the ending more than I would've liked (mostly the final 5th) but whatya gon do.

RR, subtle but very present (the drama is not romance focused tho, more of a family drama but both leads are married). ML is a househusband who's the more caring and nurturing type while FL is a cop who's more cool and rough. I love them so hecking much

RR. Cute puppy ML x strong, feisty FL in the 1st arc, but the 2nd arc takes place in a matriarchy. FL peruses ML and he's very much a tsundere (though admittedly far sweeter than the usual) and she's all forward, trying to woo him. 10/10 rr dip kiss scene AND FL teaching ML how to shoot an arrow scene, would recommend. Also FL's mother, the empress actually has a husband who loves her dearly and takes care of her 10/10. There's still the expected traditional things things in the drama so yeah

RR. Ended up being more RR than I was expecting o-o The drama is split into two arcs, in the first one, FL travels through time and gets close to ML who's an idol. He's very much a flustered tsundere turned puppy while she behaves like the empress that she is, periodt. In the 2nd arc they both travel back to FL's time and ML becomes FL's concubine. He does chase her first which was less than ideal but in the 'trying to win favour' kinda way for the most part. He also befriends two fellow concubines and they form a brotherhood as they each try to win the empress' favour xD There's also some platonic-RR with a neighbouring kingdom where the princess presents her little brother as a consort for FL. He's the embodiment of a himbo and deserved better while his sister is the scheming evil one

RR. FL is a rich and powerful heiress that's bold and enjoys the company of men. ML is a poor shy and reserved bodyguard whom was mistreated by his previous boss and FL takes a liking to him so she hires him as her bodyguard instead. She's very assertive, flirty, and bold, making it clear that she likes to play, flirt, and display her power in a subtle kinda way. ML says he doesn't like any of that but goes along with it anyway, falling into her honey trap and becoming her plaything anyway (he's most often submissive but seems like he could/is more of a switch since he also has dominant tendencies *shrug*). 

The actual role reversal in this one is more subtle than others of the same kind. The leads almost seem traditional but then not in a subtle but still quite RR kind of way. Both was and wasn't what I was expecting/hoping for. I think certain RR elements could've been done better and after the first couple of episodes (1-8) it kinda strays form the RR-ness

RR. FL is this suave, flirty, chill jokester type ML is very bothered, passive and easily flustered. He's the 'looks tough but is very soft' type. He also plays caretaker to her quite often and she saves him pretty much all the time. Both leads kick butt in a power couple kinda way, yes, however FL does way more of it and is way better at it, ML is the designated driver.

RR. FL is a domineering and actually p cool CEO. ML is a down on his luck waiter who ends up becoming her secretary and contract boyfriend after she saves him from being taken advantage of (like OMGGGG, knight in shining armour much??? She even pays for his mother's(?) hospital bills, like c'mooonn). FL is flirty, forward and cheeky while ML is shy, submissive and awkward. (she show was made with pocket change and a dream but I would LIVE for a longer version of this, like omg)

RR. Peak brat ML x brat-tamer FL dynamic if I've ever seen any. ML was the prefect tsundere bratty kitten and FL was just so cool and mature, effortlessly managing his petty outbursts and needy tendencies. FL comes to ML's company to guide him for him to inherit his family's company so she is also somewhat like his mentor. Also the amount of times FL brings a clingy drunk ML home is far too many- bro does unfortunately have a drinking problem xD The first 3/4ths are super RR, then it kinda goes a bit into traditional territory with ML proposing and going into "I'll protecc u" territory but it' whatever IG. 

Their steamy scenes are incredible, tho. If you need a fix of puppy eyes and whiny "jiejies" this is for you.

RR. Due to circumstances, FL is rather cold, assertive, cunning, and dominant (she's also anything but shy about her sexuality and actively pursues what she wants). ML, on the other hand, is playful and sweet (and submissive), so they have a bit of the grumpy FL x sunshine ML thing going on. On top of that, FL is a princess, so she is both wealthier and more powerful than ML, who becomes her consort. This also means she spoils, protects, and bosses him. 

In many ways, ML behaves more like a wife (caring, nurturing, always considering FL's feelings, needs, and job, making sure she's taken care of, and is the more emotional and sensitive one) and FL like the husband (cold and aloof, very focused on her work and less on relationships, always busy and coming home late, very dense, bad at feelingsTM). They definitely have traditional elements, but for the most part, they play the RR pretty thick. 

FL is also very protective, not just of her ML (she has the 'touch him and I'll kill you' attitude (ep 14, 19, & 20)) but also with her little brother (who she's always looking out for) and even the country itself. 

• Third Couple: Fairly RR. SFL is a free-spirited girlboss with crossdressing tendencies and a strong will who falls in love with a free-spirited cutie who lets her compromise him. 10/10
  
• Secondary Couple: Somewhat RR. TML is the crown prince and SFL is a powerful martial artist. She's quite the tomboy and a very skilled fighter.

RR. A unique spin on the transmigration story where FL depends on herself and actually protects her husband rather than the other way around. ML is mistreated by family and fellow villagers alike and thus FL stands up for him and protects him on numerous occasions. He definitely also protects her but only after she picks a fight. She's also extremely down-bad for him, like she wants him so so bad and constantly flirts with him while he is very shy and easily flustered, trying to dodge her advances but being unable to.

FL is cold, aloof, and short of words; meanwhile, ML is the opposite, always chatty, optimistic, warm, and friendly. She protects, saves, and even carries him multiple times already. 

Then there's SFL, who's ALSO a badass, and she's the senior of TML. Not strictly RR, but tends to be the other way around most often. She's also colder and meaner, while her junior is sweet and innocent.

Fairly RR. Most of the RR happens because of the matriarchy setting (think, fathers taking care of the household, male courtesans, female rules/officials/guards etc.). It's explored okay-ish (still lacking but at least there's an attempt) and the secondary couple were quite cute and rr (musician x princess. Both are gentle and sweet towards each other which is a refreshing dynamic for sure and the musician is really giving mommy bf vibes and I've never seen before or since, but I'm obsessed).

ML is adorably pouty and cute, loving the possessive attention of his new 'owner'. Their dynamic is quite RR save for the fact that ML still saves the day (because of course). 

Scene of note: ML going into merman 'heat' and FL being his only remedy- I am not making this up.

Fairly RR. Honestly I was positively surprised with his hidden gem!! Quite an unusual watch in the sea of RR minidramas. FL is the ruling empress of a (seemingly) patriarchal kingdom. ML is her loyal general who attends the concubine selection and with the help of previous life shenanigans, they fall in love. In terms of RR, this one ranks pretty high but arguably the best part of it, is that the role reversal felt somewhat more realistic and subtle. They neither go to the extreme of literally reversing the roles nor to the 'there was an attempt' territory, it stands kind of in-between which makes it refreshing. 

In the sea of RR reverse-harem dramas that are basically just the traditional stuff but FL holds a higher position, this one stands out. It really felt like all the men were concubines trying to win their wife's favor in a more expected and RR kinda way (without being only domineering and possessive. They had their moments but there was more to it). ML especially was a (manipulative) drama king. How he'd immediately tear up when another man approached FL and cry woe-is-me to have FL's attention (dw, she liked only him) was peak RR goodness. FL also made quite a believable empress (poor writing aside). She was no child whining constantly. 

Both steamy scenes were very interesting. One was clear femdom the other was... role reversal but different. Definitely very interesting. I'd recommend checking both out (I'd link timestamps but the videos change in length often, it's a bit past the midway point).

ML still takes on a more traditional role as FL's protector and general which is why this didn't rank higher. Dynamic-wise they're RR, relationship-wise they're somewhat RR but it mostly stems from their dynamic/positions.

Fairly RR. Slight romance. FL is tasked with making something out of a failing host club with quirky hosts. FL is the aloof and slightly mean kind, she's strong (like also literally, she kicks butt) and determined and very protective of her boys. The MML is this super shy awkward angel who's also the most popular host (xD). There are a lot of pretty boys everywhere (with interesting fashion styles, I will say) with even one supporting character being a femboy (an ALT femboy at that) and ngl, I didn't realize just how DEPRIVED I am of femboys I have been, good grief- Hell, even the host's uncle is super feminine. Twas lovely~

Fairly RR. Role reversal extends only as far as the matriarchy concept goes which by itself is already rather shallow. The lead couple are RR on the surface but traditional in execution. ML is still the more powerful, intelligent, capable one and ends up saving FL left and right while FL is little other than a bratty damsel in distress. At least they do have some cute RR moments between the leads, which I'm ngl is mostly carried by the ML (and his super charismatic acting). 

Regardless, ML is still somehow the more RR-coded one. He owns a brothel which he runs with his boy squad™. He's also a dancer, queenmaker, a drama queen, and his relationship with his mother plays an important role in the drama. FL is lowkey toxic as hell (so yay for the rr in that aspect ig?) and other than that just whiny.

I dropped everything I was doing to watch this movie RAW- Matriarchy setting which was thoroughly executed, arguably of the best I've seen (I mean female empress, princesses, officials, soldiers and they like behave like the opposite sex too? Like the men take care of the kids and look out for each other- like IT WAS GIVING OK). FL is a badass princess while ML is a pretty dancer with his goal being the bestest dancer UwU She saves him multiple times (even saves him from being taken advantage of) and he's so smitten, like omg. Unfortunately it later falters a lot and loses the RR focus. ML trains and becomes a powerful warrior and they become more of a power-couple, which is fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine, I'm not piiiiiiiiiiiiiissed :))))

Fairly RR. For a full-length high-budget cdrama this was incredible! 

Firstly, we have the leads. FL is a rake/playgirl princess who defies the standards for women of the time by being unmarried and playing with men. She's confident, flirty, badass, and fiercely protective. But her secret is that she's a half demon and lord of the demon underworld. Then there's ML, a low-ranking official who trained as a Taoist to hunt demons. He's extremely softspoken, shy, reserved, and quiet- like some of the best quiet soft ML rep I've ever seen. 

He seems to be crushing on her from the get-go, and she sets her eyes on him, thoroughly enjoying flirting with him and making him flustered. She also protects him a LOT, mostly from snobby rich people looking down on him. 

Then there's the secondary couple consisting of a clingy puppy nobleman and a cold and aloof ancient serpent demon. Typical cold woman/warm man, but she bullies him quite a bit, so it's a bit sad T_T

There are also several male flower spirits/demons, which are always such a treat for me ^^

Fairly RR. RR in theory, RR in execution but it's so little actually focused on the romance that I'm in a pickle on how to rank this. FL is a tall tomboy(ish, not really) basketball player helplessly in love with her crush. ML is a soft-spoken but sassy fashion designer, quite a bit shorter than FL. She's physically stronger than him and even carries him (bridal style) once while he has to teach her about fashion and its industry because, well, she's a tomboy. 

But again... the focus was so... not on the romance that it felt a bit lacking... Their height difference is 10/10 though. If you like men looking up with cute puppy eyes, I highly recommend. Also recc for those who like them boys with an attitude but not insufferable.

Fairly RR. Of the more down-to-earth type of RR. FL is taller than the average and ML is shorter, they're partnered up for a dance and must find a way to make it work and overcome their insecurities. A lot of social commentary on gender roles through a fairly lighthearted lens. Quite tasteful about it all, both leads finally realise that being different isn't bad and embrace their switched gender roles (that RR dance scene at the end was 100/10).

He's a cute nerd and she's a cunning ruler

ML isn't really lagging behind since he's a detective and a good one at that, but he's way more bubbly, constantly worrying about FL and the peopleTM, and always smiling at her. He supports her, letting her do her thing, knowing she's more than capable of taking care of herself and of him. He also is the more sensitive one, taking risks for the people while FL just wants to protect him and keep him safe <3

Fairly RR. Slightly RR for the main couple. Mostly because it's a reversal of a more common dynamic... ML ends up forced to become a princess' concubine and FL is a poor hardworking maid. Their personalities aren't really too RR but fall more into egalitarian territory with both wanting to protect each other and cherishing each other in the same way but their circumstances make their dynamic a bit more RR. 

There's also a toxic RR dynamic between ML and SFL. She's a powerful princess, the scheming and crazy kind that no one dares mess with. She's known for liking and keeping beautiful men by her side, even if it means taking them by force. ML had been on her radar for a while so she orchestrated the downfall of his family to abduct him and force him to become her concubine. Nasty (but admittedly entertaining RR) power play between them. He's very righteous, kind, and strong-willed, so she enjoys it all the more to toy with him, flirt, and humiliate him.

FL is cold and aloof, unafraid of making the tough calls and very distant and broken (her answer to everything is violence and I'm here for it) while ML is warm and kind, far too innocent and idealistic for his own good. In pretty much everything, FL is more experienced (love, politics, etc) while ML is not. Though he's the emperor, she definitely takes the lead in the relationship. Secondary couple have similar vibes but more badass power couple vibes since both are fighters. SML still has that "I can fix her" energy tho. Admittedly the RR vibes falter a bit for the leads and entirely for the secondary couple as the show progresses, ML becomes more assertive and FL calms down a lot which kinda leaves them more in egalitarian territory than RR, still a massive W tho <3

She's so commanding of him, takes what she wants from him, is assertive afff and he rather eagerly lets her-- Yes, they're toxic but it is RR

Fairly RR. It definitely wasn't as RR as I was expecting, it was however more gay than I was expecting xD The RR extends mostly as far as the world does. IMO it was actually a pretty good adaptation of a matriarchy stemming exclusively out of need (due to the high male mortality) and thus has a lot of patriarchy-like elements as it transitions. 

FL is veryyyy RR. She's extremely badass, mature, wise, you name it. ML is the free-spirit type, very focused on being a samurai so less RR unfortunately. The drama takes place in what's essentially the harem so there's a lot of men being extra and petty (and very, very gay). Unfortunately not a whole lot of women, even FL shows up only at the midpoint. 

TLDR: Matriarchy, Male-Harem, Concubine ML, Shogun/Empress FL, Strong FL, Badass FL, Escort (prostitute) ML (briefly in the beginning) 

Fairly RR. All the boys are naive and innocent. FL is bubbly but assertive and rather forward (and so incredibly, tremendously down bad, we love to see it) while ML is definitely a tsundere (he was kinda giving spunky kick-yo-ass but a guy). She is the forward one, actively perusing him and he's very shy and flustered. SFL is a cold and aloof CEO (+ her assistant is a man) while SML is the gentle and nurturing type. Still seeing how their dynamic progresses but so far, he's giving a bit mommy BF vibes to her workaholic loner.

Fairly RR. I feel like this was the original concept for both Zhang Gong Zhu Zai Shang AND Dong Lan Xue because it has elements of both. Fairly RR. Unexpectedly very RR for a crime/thriller with little romance but a LOT of subtext. FL is a rough, cold, no-nonsense tomboy chief detective, and ML is a bougie and adorable rich diva heir. ML ends up working under her, and FL can't stand him. Despite their initial hostility, FL saves him often, and he even goes to her when he's scared, and she reluctantly (but is it really?) always helps him. ML can handle himself, but he still needs saving often. ML is also very peacock-coded, flamboyant if you will, in both personality and style, while FL is very lowkey, tomboy by comparison, in every way. 

There's also a supporting character that gives off a lot of dom energy, often grabbing ML and SML in dom ways for the case (*wink wink*).

FL transmigrates so her supposedly badass persona ends up being more typical, ML on the other hand remains more rr but it's not great rep tbh.

Then there's the secondary couple, SFL x SML. Now THESE TWO were giving. She's protective, hot-tempered, aloof, domineering, possessive, the whole thing while he's sweet, kind, nurturing, calmer and always trying to do damage control. She even says that he belongs to her <33333 Unfortunately their scenes together are basically nonexistent and they're mostly written off after the first couple of eps.

00:00-20:00: VERY RR. FL is a diety of some kind, ML is a mistreated ranchman's son that's sacrificed to her. She takes him to her domain and proceeds to cultivate magical butterflies inside him (subs were weird, idk either) while dominating the hell out of him. He fluctuates between being submissive and into it and wanting to escape from her (implied that said cultivation affected his 'desire' so seems like dubcon vibes). She's pretty rough and cruel with him but the visuals are 10/10. She's strong and badass, he's a prince in peril with puppy eyes. She's also essentially an immortal so older woman/younger man vibes too. Absolutely amazing beginning 

The rest: Somewhat/Slightly RR (fluctuates) The roles reverse after the initial 20 minutes and it goes into more maledom territory. He has her captive but from what I skimmed it did seem like she ultimately was the one in control (duh, she's a supernatural creature and he's some guy) even if it really doesn't seem like it.

Fairly RR. Talk about an actual all-male-harem drama done right. The story follows FL who's a ruthless, cold princess (and they commit to this bit very very well, she's brutal) who's cleaning up the court. This is the main plot of the drama and the romance is secondary. ML is her submissive, borderline masochistic bodyguard who acts more like a general attendant + guard. He's the shy, reserved type but not cold and definitely jealous (and very eager for punishment, like dang bro). 

But onto the harem part. The drama takes place in a patriarchy, however FL is permitted to have 5 husbands (not including ML). The harem plays a pretty big part in the drama with each consort having a time to shine. It was a good in-between where it didn't feel like every guy was extremely down bad for FL like in the reverse-harem genre but it also didn't feel like they were just guys that were also there like in a lot of those other all-male harems. They vied for FL's affection but didn't claw each other's eyes out over it and FL ultimately only had eyes for ML.

Fairly RR. Yet another adaptation of the Legend of White Snake, but with a twist this time. FL is a powerful, colossal snake demon who gets amnesia and ends up meeting a kindhearted snake catcher. FL is the softspoken kind, but she's also fiercely protective, badass, and strong. ML is the bubbly, friendly type, and their romance is mostly egalitarian, leaning a bit more RR due to the nature of their dynamic. 

There are lots of cool shots where FL is in her big AF snake form and ML is tiny tiny by comparison. She saves him a lot, but he's still very devoted to her and saves her back a couple of times.

The secondary couple give more RR goodness though, SFL is a domeneering warrior while SML is submissive nobleman. Nothing deep but pretty cute and she's assertive AF.

Fairly RR. FL is an empress, ML is her consort who's there to kill her because she's evil, however turns out FL has two personalities. Because of this premise, FL spends most of the show as a bit of the dumb naive FL type ;-; Her alter ego is deliciously domineering though. ML embarks on a quest to save FL from herself (lol) so he's quite caring and sweet towards her. I will say that the story is about FL which is very refreshing for Cdramas especially. Even in the end, she tells ML that her ruling matters more to her than her love life and he agrees to stay by her side and help her. 

I'm a bit conflicted about where to rank this one so I'll just leave it here for now. 

TLDR: Empress/Queen FL, Consort ML, Caring ML, FL Focused Story, Strong FL, Cruel FL. 

Fairly RR. FL marries down-on-his-luck ML as a matrilocal husband after saving him (she literally pays his family for the marriage, so it's *chefs kiss*). She's a bold and assertive businesswoman, and he's a sweet and innocent inventor. She takes the lead in the relationship and keeps assuring his parents that she'll take good care of him and protect him.

Lead couple are quite egalitarian imo. They kinda give the same in the relationship, there are no overly big gestures from either of them without it being reciprocated. Both give and take the same, so it's very healthy and balanced. I will say that FL is quite assertive, stubborn, and no-nonsense, while ML is quiet, shy, and reserved. She's also quite protective of him 

TLDR: Protective FL, Strong FL, Assertive FL, Passive ML, Shy ML, Egalitarian Relationship (leads) | CEO SFL, Puppy SML, Warm Man SML x Cold Woman SFL, Older Woman SFL x Younger Man SML

Fairly RR. FL is a famous doctor who's tired of life. She's aloof, chaotic, and a drunk. Meanwhile ML is the town puppy, always helping people out and generally a warm himbo. She's also established to be quite a bit older than him and she's his first time which is also a whole thing. He sticks to her and wants to 'fix her' (love her anyway, lol) and she treats him quite coldly, pushing him away but warms up to him. There's also SML who very warm and bubbly and super squeamish about doctory-things (especially compared to his female coworkers). He also kinda acts like FL's protégé and is one of the only men in the ward

Somewhat RR. Not romance (subtext only) First off, FL is the ACTUAL main character, instantly +10 points. The romance is subtle which imo worked for the best. FL is a badass monster hunter and ML is a special boy (<3) who she has a magical connection with (he's literally a recharge station for her). She's strong, bold, brave and selfless and he's her pretty companion who's trying his best to understand. She saves him a lot, is super protective of him (as well as her students) and is jealous of the others that want him (double meaning of 'want' for his ability and/or for his heart, mmmmm). ML is also a teacher which is apparently a common babygirl job. 

TLDR: Girlboss FL x Malewife ML, Badass FL, Strong FL, Brave FL, Weak ML, Supportive ML, Eccentric FL x Grounded ML, FL saves ML, Sidekick ML, Assertive FL, Protective FL, Jealous FL, Nice ML. 

Somewhat RR. FL is a rich CEO, ML is a poor bartender barely making ends meet to save his sickly girlfriend. FL wants him for nefarious reasons so after she saves him from being harassed by women, she becomes like his sugar mama, paying for his expenses and for his time ;) ML is very much like her boytoy, sticking by her side, warming her bed, and cooking for her. FL is dominant but in the 'serve me' kinda way and ML is submissive in the 'yes, ma'am' kinda way. It's not as RR as one hope might think but it's pretty good nevertheless. ML still has his protective BF moments but so does FL and far cooler so it balances itself out xD 

Allow me to just quote the title on YT: "She took out three gold bars and bought the poor boy as her bedmate." (it is not clickbait but maybe a lil exaggerrated)

Somewhat RR. The embodiment of r/therewasanattempt. They tried to do the matriarchy and sometimes they did fine but... overall, it was quite underwhelming in this department. They had some good things for sure, FL having two husbands, SML was giving malewifecore, secondary and tertiary couple were kinda giving, but ultimately, it wasn't great. I've since watched more historical cdramas of all kinds and I must say that the RR is present, despite being shallow. It also doesn't help that this is a sequel and not a standalone.

She teases him and he's both intrigued by her but also scared.

Somewhat RR. Though it doesn't seem RR initially, the dynamic leans into role reversal due to circumstances. This is in great part due to ML's disability which makes him more vulnerable and thus FL steps up as his protector and caretaker. He can definitely hold his own, far more than would be believable but FL still does the bulk of the standing-up and protecting him. She very much takes a gentlewoman approach and the scenes where she guides him someplace are 10/10. FL is tough, merciless, and badass, pretending only superficially to be a demure maid. ML is soft-spoken, reserved, and shy. He's mistreated by pretty much every person he encounters and thus relies on FL to protect him.

Somewhat RR. FL is a slave girl turned noblewoman in disguise. ML is the mistreated illegitimate son of a noble who becomes a storyteller (basically a historical k-idol). FL is strong both physically and emotionally, she's independent, smart af, and even skilled in fighting. ML is an artiste~ He's warmhearted and bubbly (very eccentric for the time-period), he dances, sings, and writes novels and is not very athletic at all. He fell in love with her at first sight and never got over it but FL keeps him at a distance. Also worth mentioning that ML wears a veil more often than not because he's just so popular [source].

Somewhat RR. The leads themselves aren't all that RR, but they also aren't traditional per se. To me, they fell more into egalitarian territory, but a lot of aspects of the story lend themselves to be RR, thus affecting the leads. FL is a wealthy, hot-tempered woman in her 30s trying to fit into the expected stereotype of the perfect demure lady. ML is a flamboyant host (basically sex worker) in his early 20s, ostracized by society and struggling to open up. They do have a lot more traditional elements to them, but still RR enough to rank.

The biggest role reversal is the fact that ML is the sex worker, and it doesn't play into 'him corrupting an innocent woman' despite what some characters believe. It is more so framed as him being dirty and therefore undeserving of her, which isn't the most RR but does come off that way in the drama. The drama also does a good job of showing sex work from a man's POV.

Somewhat RR. Not really RR in themes, tbh... The coupling is rather traditional but on the healthy side (no toxic ML or FL!!). ML is a cross-dresser and honestly rocks it which is the most RR aspect of the drama (it is one of the main aspects though, so) and FL is lowkey fascinated by him and his beauty.

Somewhat RR. More egalitarian than role reversal but it had some elements. FL is an extremely strong person, confident, and sure of herself, and though ML isn't exactly weak, he does let her take charge more often than not, often even saying he likes being used by her (for revenge, ok, buttttttt-). We stan a supportive king. They're the definition of Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss and Malewife, Manipulate, Manwh--e, tbh. FL is also more experienced in love due to having been married before and ML is a flustered mess about it so she often takes initiative or pulls an uno reverse on him xD Lastly, the story is about FL so she's the MAIN main character.

Somewhat RR. A very well done noona romance with some RR elements as well. I will start this off by saying that ML really embodies the 'young man wanting to impress an older woman' character type which isn't very RR xD That being said, the age gap is handled very well with FL being mature, grounded, and protective and ML being a cutie vying for her affection and trying to prove himself. Their dynamic felt quite egalitarian in the end since both put in equal amounts and balance each other out very well.

Somewhat RR. ML takes his sister's place in a wedding and pretends to be her in her new family. He really goes all out with his disguise both looking and behaving the part. He's not actually like that outside of his disguise but it's still amusing and pleasant to see. FL is strong, bold, and assertive, protective of her sister-in-law (ML lol) despite not really being a fighter (she protects him from himself). Sister-in-law ML x Sister-in-law FL isn't an RR dynamic I thought I would ever see but here I am

SFL takes on her brother's identity (ML) in order to get close with what's actually ML's husband (what should've been her husband). The family dynamics are honestly a mess.

Then there's the mother (FL) and they family friend who has a thing for her (SML). He's submissive to her and tries very hard to please her, meanwhile she's tough as nails and uninterested. 

Finally, there's the second daughter (SFL) and the family servant (ML). The least RR out of the three but she often has to look out for him and stand up for him and he IS her servant

Somewhat RR. Very slight romance. RR more for the family dynamics. The lead couple have a bit of a girlboss x malewife thing going on. She's also cold and struggles to do feelings while he's warm and affectionate. Ultimately though, their dynamic is more egalitarian and power-coupley than RR though she is stronger than him, the story focuses around her, and she calls the shots. 

Family dynamics: Especially in regards to FL's parental dynamic with both her children. First her son (TML), who's a total mama's boy and he admires and loves her greatly, wanting to be like her. He's gentle and considerate like his father. Then there's the daughter (SFL), who's rough and mean and has a competitive and kinda distrusting relationship with her mother (giving Jason & Bruce, iykyk). There's also the relationship between both teens (twins), SFL and TML. She's significantly stronger than him but he can hold his own.

Finally the evil organization that's run by a woman known as The Mother, while The Fathers manage the children. It was surprisingly RR. There's also a consistent winx-like theme where the women seem to obtain power while the men are their center/caretaker, which I always think is interesting.

Somewhat RR. No romance, but BOY does it seem like there is. This drama doesn't seem like it'll be RR at first and though it has no romance, it has role reversed elements woven into the story. Firstly, the main MC is FL while ML plays a supporting MC role. Though he's not weak by any means (military man turned magistrate) she outplays him constantly and he becomes more of a pawn in her game. Both have rascal energy but FL takes it to the next level, revenge-hungry and unapologetic as she is, she's a force of nature carefully inciting everyone to move to her tune while ML very often ends up keeping his head low and following orders, trying what he can but ultimately needing to turn to FL for aid more often than not. He's also very sensitive and emotional. 

Then there's FL's all-girl squad of revenge-seekers. Every lady is badass, strong, and emotionally unavailable. Meanwhile the good men in the drama are far more emotional and innocent than the women. There's also role reversed sibling dynamic where the sister is very protective of her brother whom a foreign princess wants to force into a peace-making marriage. She goes through great lengths to defend him and is not subtle about it at all. She's also the main schemer while he's kindhearted and benevolent. 

Lastly, the societal RR. Though this is set in a mostly realistic historical period, it takes place during Wu Zhou Dynasty (Empress Regent Wu Ze Tian's rule). Which means that the empress (prominent supporting character) is the ruler and thus by extension a lot more egalitarian norms have been in the move. e.g. female officials (SFL), and a prince being sent off to marry into a foreign country for peace (entire story arc).

Somewhat RR. Not romance but I didn't ship leads this much in a LONG time. Strong, badass, cold detective FL & warm, kind, weak teacher ML (AND SHE'S TALLER THAN HIM). They're dynamic was GIVING so much RR. He worries about her, she protects him, he tags along and she's reluctant, he breaks through her cold and aloof persona and she warms up to him-- what a DUO! 

Also FL is basically the typical depressed workaholic detective but a woman and she's protective of her son-figure too so some great and unusual 'mother'-'son' bonding. Also, the drama is basically the reversal of the usual 'woman is brutally murdered and the men fix the problem'. This time it's a boy who's the victim and a woman solves the problem, 10/10

It's also implied that FL was the one to make an arrangement with ML's family to marry him but I'm not sure since I watched it raw. 

The secondary couple also have some girlboss x malewife vibes but they don't appear a whole lot.

Somewhat RR. Hard to exactly follow the plot since it wasn't subtitled, but it seemed like ML saved FL (based on vibes and context clues, I'm assuming he's a merman so a Little Mermaid kinda situation). He proceeds to follow her around like a cute little puppy and saves her from the trouble she was more deeply in. It had the aloof FL x cute, naive ML trope which was endearing but other than that it wasn't very RR.

Somewhat RR. Honestly, this was a lot less RR than I was expecting. FL is a skilled teen (not) assassin who can totally kick ass, and ML is a regular depressed teen with masochistic tendencies as a form of SH. He falls in love with her when she kicks his ass and clings to her like a lifeline. He's not really too weak since he does know how to fight, but he doesn't do it often, and thus FL ends up protecting and saving him quite often.
