  • My Beautiful Man Season 2

    1. My Beautiful Man Season 2

    Japanese Drama - 2023, 4 episodes

    9.5

As good as the 1st Season, if not better. More character depth and relationship development. Liked how there was consistency from the 1st Season. Also, liked the recreated use of scenes  and locations (i.e. cross-references) from the 1st Season.

Interesting take how both Kiyoi and Hira are actually desperate to preserve their 'forever' with each other but have their own different internal fears over it. Kiyoi wonders if Hira will always be there for him forever, while Hira is terrified that his current happiness won't last because he isn't worthy of it and is just waiting for the axe to fall at any time.

Hira's issue has moved on from not feeling he is worthy to even touch Kiyoi what more be in a relationship with him (1st Season), to feeling that what he has with Kiyoi is just a temporary dream which can shatter at any time and so is living in constant fear and anxiety of its termination.

Kiyoi, meanwhile, is trying build a certain and strong relationship with Hira hoping for permanency but finds Hira's insecurities to be a major stumbling block. But it's really good to see Kiyoi making adjustments and trying to bridge the gap, especially with encouraging and supporting Hira in many little ways.

One of the few BLs where leads are really trying to work through their relationship and character issues without all the other fringe issues such as 3rd parties or plot devices used to create conflict, etc etc. The focus is on their characters, their growth and their relationship which is what makes me like this show so much. <3

  • Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice but to Kiss!

    2. Mr. Unlucky Has No Choice but to Kiss!

    Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes

    4.0

The first 4 episodes were interesting and cute but then it went downhill with the continued use of comedy which diluted any meaning the setup could have afforded. Fukuhara was so busy focusing on trying not to fall in love and on using Shinomiya as his bad-luck shield, it was getting tiresome to watch his superficial & shallow struggles; and the resolution didn't come across authentic because the guilt he seemed to carry about the whole thing wasn't really reflected in his inner thoughts prior to the sudden explosion of action. The leads' relationship also degenerated into BFF-type of dynamic after the couple got together, it was a bit of a let down.

  • Lesson in Love

    3. Lesson in Love

    Taiwanese Drama - 2022, 12 episodes

    1.0

The teacher-student issue morphed into full-on soap opera with a lot of other things thrown in - didn't like. More importantly, could not really connect with the female lead. Not sure if it is an acting issue but there were many scenes where it was difficult to fathom what was going on through her mind and her facial expressions or body language was not easy to decipher. No idea how she fell in love with Zhang Yixing and didn't feel the chemistry between the leads. Was not emotionally invested in the characters or their story or their relationship.

    Dropped at episode 8.

  • Old Fashion Cupcake

    4. Old Fashion Cupcake

    Japanese Drama - 2022, 5 episodes

    9.0

A warm, grounded and grown-up drama about mid-life crises and learning to find enjoyment in life again through new experiences. Solid mature acting and heart-warming story. Again, the drama focuses on the characters and their personal/ internal struggles (well one of them at least), rather than using 3rd party plot device or other conflict-driven events. Character-driven and relationship-driven dramas that focus on the leads trying to overcome them (and being helped to overcome them) with minimal outside interference are my favourites. The confession scene was also one of the best with its myriad of emotions and with the intensity in the air, after such gradual but good buildup.

  • Candy Color Paradox

    5. Candy Color Paradox

    Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes

    3.0

Quite a watchable show. Some situations were a bit too forced or ridiculous or silly but it was interesting to see how the boys were dancing around each other as partners. Last episode even had a bit of steam.

  • 18 Again

    6. 18 Again

    Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes

    2.0

It's actually interesting but I lost the will to keep carrying on because it was getting uncomfortable with the age gap. ML in an 18-year-old body while his wife was 38. Hmmm... not a romance I was interested in watching.

    Dropped at episode 5.

  • Crash Course in Romance

    7. Crash Course in Romance

    Korean Drama - 2023, 16 episodes

    4.0

Started out interesting with the South Korean school culture, the pressure over education, the mothers' various attitudes & cram school politics. The romance was bland and the show went too soap opera and unnecessarily dramatic from the halfway mark.

    Dropped at episode 12.

  • Lost Romance

    8. Lost Romance

    Taiwanese Drama - 2020, 20 episodes

    6.5

The in-novel bits and post-novel bits were the only watchable bits to the show.

  • Alice in Borderland Season 2

    9. Alice in Borderland Season 2

    Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes

    6.0

Liked the concept, the games - especially the King of Clubs, Jack of Hearts and King of Diamonds. Was more interested in the plot and action but not really in the characters, except maybe Chishiya. So, the last episode was pretty meh, the Queen of Hearts game didn't feel particularly suspenseful or interesting. Also, plot armour for our main characters was too obvious, it leeched some of the believability in the whole premise.

  • From Me to You

    10. From Me to You

    Japanese Drama - 2023, 12 episodes

    1.0

Yeah, nope. Main characters did not work for me at all plus the story setup was poor in the first episode. There is no real setup made as to why Sawako was scary but had a good heart, and why she caught Kazehaya's eye. Bleh. Movie is so much better.

    Dropped at episode 1.

  • Provoke

    11. Provoke

    Chinese Drama - 2023, 25 episodes

    3.5

Liked the Republican Era costumes and the hidden identity premise with all its intrigues. Better than Maid's Revenge in terms of characterisation and plot, although the romance was a bit of a slow burn and dialled down.

  • The Starry Love

    12. The Starry Love

    Chinese Drama - 2023, 40 episodes

    1.5

Did not catch or hold my attention. I thought the story setup with the twin swap would be interesting but none of the characters made me interested in them after 5 episodes. Had put it on hold for over a month and since I have no motivation to pick it back up and continue, decided to drop.

    Dropped at Ep5

  • Royal Rumours

    13. Royal Rumours

    Chinese Drama - 2023, 24 episodes

    1.0

A superficial, shallow, not really engaging watch. Can tell it's meant to be light-hearted and silly but somehow the funny isn't coming across funny, and the characters aren't interesting.

    Dropped at episode 3.

  • Under the Skin

    14. Under the Skin

    Chinese Drama - 2022, 20 episodes

    2.0

The only interesting bit about the show were the art work, drawing and painting, and some of the science behind them. But the cases were not well crafted. Too much emphasis on trying to create emotional heft or to dramatise the crime, but it doesn't really showcase how the cases are solved using portrait expertise. Also, some of the ways the people describe the faces are too flowery, no idea how a portraitist can draw anything truly definite from them. So, not really convinced about the main 'genius' in the show, nor about how they solved the cases.

    Dropped at episode 6.

  • Hidden Love

    15. Hidden Love

    Chinese Drama - 2023, 25 episodes

    7.0

A slightly more authentic & heartwarming piece of wish-fulfilment youth romance along the lines of LoveO2O. There are some differences: the secret crush in middle school, the age gap and the pseudo brother-sister relationship internal conflict, the sometimes really childish FL...

The ML is borderline too-good-to-be-true and while it's nice to see such a devoted ML, he's a bit too perfect to be realistic. The thing is, this show is filmed well. There's something about the way the characters are scripted and filmed that gives this show a slightly more authentic and sincere feeling. It skirts the line from idealistic to sometimes believable but I personally find it a bit too airbrushed, and the characters never really grow in terms of depth. They're not too 1D (the show gives them some depth and dimension from the beginning) but the problem is that while the characters stay consistent to their initial setups, they don't really grow as characters. The FL may have matured a bit, but in terms of gaining character depth or overcoming character defects, the characters don't really exhibit that.

So, while I like the idealistic youth romance and the wish fulfilment this show gives, it's not a show that really satisfies the soul or the spirit because the characters are a bit too good to be true (but couched in more authentic settings).

  • Long Vacation

    16. Long Vacation

    Japanese Drama - 1996, 11 episodes

    9.0

Rewatched and it's still as absorbing and emotionally captivating as when I had first watched it. The music made less of an impact because I remembered the places where they made a hit so in this 2nd go-round but the characterisation, the internal conflicts and insecurities and constant questioning within oneself over the ambiguity of their couple relationship made this a still compelling watch. Glad it more or less stood the test of time.

  • SOTUS

    17. SOTUS

    Thai Drama - 2016, 15 episodes

    7.0

Rewatched. Not as absorbing and fascinating as when I first watched it (I definitely noticed the less polished acting from the main leads this time round) but I still liked how unpretentious this show was. There's a wholesomeness and fun with the whole crew and side characters, and the campus vibe came across authentic and sincere. The relationship development and the character growth still made this a worthwhile watch and it definitely still stands as one of the better Thai BLs out there for me. Also, no in-your-face PPL, and faithfulness to its original source material FTW.

  • My Beautiful Man: Eternal

    18. My Beautiful Man: Eternal

    Japanese Movie - 2023

    7.0

Doesn't quite live up to S1 & S2 because of the reduced focus on the main characters and more emphasis on the plot around the actress. Also, one-sided Hira POV throughout, felt less balanced. Still nice to watch but not really wow.

  • Zenryoku de, Aishite Ii Kana?

    19. Zenryoku de, Aishite Ii Kana?

    Japanese Drama - 2023, 8 episodes

    1.0

Yikes, although I barely managed to make it through this one, this was just ugh to watch. It was like watching 2 adult toddlers playing at love.

Can't even make out what the FL's personality is like - no idea what motivates her, what her thoughts and opinions are, because they are not something she has in and of herself. She is constantly being influenced by the things she hears from the people around her, even total strangers in a restaurant talking about their discontentments will cause her to extrapolate that those problems and issues are hers. She has no mind of her own and no character of her own to speak of.

As for the ML, he supposedly fell in love with her when the FL rescued him from a bunch of thugs but afterwards the FL's personality was so diffident, insecure and timid, it makes me wonder why he stayed in love with her.

The main leads' characters just are not well defined at all and the only thing that seems to hold the both of them together is the sex. Such a useless show.

  • Under the Queen's Umbrella

    20. Under the Queen's Umbrella

    Korean Drama - 2022, 16 episodes

    1.0

About a Joseon queen trying to 'protect' her sons. No romance but that aside, didn't like the way the first 2 episodes went. Queen has no idea what is really going on in the court, she doesn't know her sons well and left them to do as they pleased which resulted in them being laidback princes. As a mother and a queen, frankly, she should realise just what sort of place the palace was and had the intelligence to have prepped herself and her sons well but noo... careless and now having to firefight.

Anyway, shows focusing on mothers are now a main trigger for me, can't watch them without getting angry and upset. Alongisde the silly setup and the lack of romance, this is a drop.

    Dropped at episode 2.

  • Triage

    21. Triage

    Thai Drama - 2022, 13 episodes

    1.0

Yeah, Thai BLs are still a no-no. I thought this one might be tolerable with the time loop/ time-travel premise but yeah, first episode could not hold my attention. Acting wasn't that good, the whole setup did not interest me.

    Dropped at episode 1.

  • Time and Him Are Just Right

    24. Time and Him Are Just Right

    Chinese Drama - 2022, 25 episodes

    1.0

Don't really like the girl-chases-guy theme. Not finding the show engaging, the characters interesting, nor the humour funny.

    Dropped after ep2.

  • The Sound of Magic

    25. The Sound of Magic

    Korean Drama - 2022, 6 episodes

    2.0

Weird musical-themed show about a down-and-out girl desperate for money and being taken advantage of, being rescued by a magician. Some aspects of it were interesting, others, not so.

    Dropped at ep4.

  • Falling into You

    26. Falling into You

    Chinese Drama - 2022, 26 episodes

    2.0

The only good thing in here was the ML. FL and the whole coaching environment was just awful. Could barely finish the drama and had to skip/ fast forward a lot of the last 6 episodes.

  • Turn to me Mukai-kun

    27. Turn to me Mukai-kun

    Japanese Drama - 2023, 10 episodes

    7.0

Thought-provoking drama about adulting and about how complicated human beings are.

  • The Ghost Bride

    28. The Ghost Bride

    Taiwanese Drama - 2020, 6 episodes

    1.5

Setting in Straits Malacca with ghost theme and murder mystery/ supernatural mystery premise, it's actually okay. It's just that I was stuck at episode 2 and had no motivation to keep going. Perhaps I may pick it up again, who knows...

    Meantime, dropped at ep2.

  • Nagatan to Aoto: Ichika no Ryori Cho

    29. Nagatan to Aoto: Ichika no Ryori Cho

    Japanese Drama - 2023, 10 episodes

    7.0

Slowburn but nice little noona romance. Set in 1950s with traditional Japanese restaurant and showing a variety of cooking recipes & techniques, those were the best bits. Main leads had a bit of character development too as FL gained confidence in her skills and ML learned to be less judgemental and more supportive. Cinematography here was also really lovely with the mellow traditional settings. A sort of shorter but smoother younger version of Fukuyado Honpo: Kyoto Love Story.

  • Marry My Dead Body

    30. Marry My Dead Body

    Taiwanese Movie - 2022

    4.0

Almost slapsticky Taiwanese comedy about a homophobic guy who had to be spirit-married to a gay man and all sorts of silly and weird shenanigans ensure. Taiwanese humour never really quite works for me and it still holds true here. It can be quite funny in places but it can also be cringey in others too. It was an equal mix of haha and ugh so am giving it a middle '5' rating.

  • Oh No! Here Comes Trouble

    31. Oh No! Here Comes Trouble

    Taiwanese Drama - 2023, 12 episodes

    4.0

I guess ghost stories aren't my cup of tea. Episodic format with main mystery behind but by episode 9, lost motivation and interest to keep watching. Concept is interesting though, and some of the humour is funny.

    Dropped at ep9.

  • A Moment to Remember

    32. A Moment to Remember

    Korean Movie - 2004

    1.5

Only made it to the first quarter of this movie but decided nah. ML was rough but interesting but that was the only thing which interested me in this movie. Not sure how to think of the FL, she was a bit of a weird one but I didn't really like her. Romance was quick and perfunctory and honestly, wasn't interested in getting to know more of their love story (they were not a couple that caught my attention) so stopped there.

    Dropped.

  • Cross Fire

    33. Cross Fire

    Chinese Drama - 2020, 36 episodes

    3.0

No romance and the 2 separate timelines weren't able to hold my attention. Was not interested in any of the characters or their team members, couldn't feel any sense of camaraderie or team work, not really rooting for anybody so pass.

    Dropped at ep12.

  • I Just Want to See You

    34. I Just Want to See You

    Japanese Drama - 2022, 4 episodes

    4.5

Only managed to watch the first and last eps in this 4-episode mini-series. It's okay. High school summer, minor angsting between a more serious boy and a more lively one. It's not very eventful and not a lot of character building. The close relationship was well established from the start but it didn't really feel like longing and love, more like fondness and affection. So, mid-rating for me as it had some nice things but not quite there.

  • Nagi's Long Vacation

    35. Nagi's Long Vacation

    Japanese Drama - 2019, 10 episodes

    7.0

Interesting drama about a couple of characters (Nagi and Shinji) who are trapped in a cycle of trying to live to please others, especially parents. Very reminiscient of real life and the struggles of wanting to be true to yourself yet finding that wanting to look good in front of others, to please others takes precedence until they were almost drowned by it. Nagi at least at the end is trying to find her way out of this slavery situation but it is baby steps. Can be frustrating at times, especially at the beginning, but by the middle of the show onwards, it got a lot better.

  • Love Me, Love My Voice

    36. Love Me, Love My Voice

    Chinese Drama - 2023, 33 episodes

    3.0

This is too sanitised. Characters in here are too nice and have no real character flaws to be real. Side characters are also too nice to be real. Everything goes smoothly and even strangers interacting with main characters are too nice to be real. Main characters have no character development, and I really cannot see why they fall in love with each other. It's all just a sanitised feel-good show with no real substance to speak of.

    Dropped at ep16.

  • More than Words

    37. More than Words

    Japanese Drama - 2022, 10 episodes

    3.0

From ep1, can tell it's a drama steeped in realism and rawness about the brokenness of people and how relationships can get all messed up because of our brokenness. Cinematography reminds me of 'Your Name Engraved Herein'. It has a very moody and gloomy and dysfunctional vibe going. Since this show needs a certain mood and a certain mindset to be watching it, it is best I don't continue since I'm not in the mood for this sort of raw, realistic type of show.

    Dropped at ep2.

  • BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita: Crank Up Hen

    38. BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita: Crank Up Hen

    Japanese Special - 2023, 3 episodes

    7.0

Funny and light-hearted drama that doesn't take itself seriously and almost at times a spoof on its meta genre. But, despite its hilarity and lack of seriousness, it has organic relationship development and it also portrays well the struggles of a child actor who has disappeared into irrelevance. There's a heart beating in there somewhere in the middle of all the funny hijinks and that was what made this show extra enjoyable.

  • Amidst a Snowstorm of Love

    39. Amidst a Snowstorm of Love

    Chinese Drama - 2024, 30 episodes

It was interesting until the main leads got together and then I lost interest.

  • The Legend of Shen Li

    40. The Legend of Shen Li

    Chinese Drama - 2024, 39 episodes

    1.5

Somehow was not able to engage with the drama. Didn't find the main leads' characters and their interactions appealing or captivating within the first 3 episodes.

    Dropped at ep3.

  • My Sweet Mobster

    41. My Sweet Mobster

    Korean Drama - 2024, 16 episodes

    6.0

Started funny and entertaining but started to go flat at the halfway mark. The ML was cute and funny when he's interacting with the FL with his overly polite & courteous demenour (his voice is interestingly gravelly) but that was mostly in the first half. Side couple became the only thing worth watching by the 2nd half.

  • Dhevaprom: Kwanruetai

    42. Dhevaprom: Kwanruetai

    Thai Drama - 2024, 14 episodes

    6.0

It has been a while since I last touched a proper lakorn but since this is a sequel to the Suparburoot Juthathep series (which I love and have a great soft spot for), I had to check a couple of these sequels out. I'd heard that the 1st one 'Laorchan' was not good so went for 'Kwanruetai' which sounded a lot like Puttipat's story re-hashed, which, in a lot of ways, it is.

ML is Puttipat's son, ML is Marathee's daughter and some of the conflict was a throwback to the past issues with the parents which was a good follow up. I also liked the setting where ML is an army doctor (medical profession like his father) while FL is a village girl who also, at one point, entered a beauty contest, haha.

Anyway, plenty of callbacks and throwbacks. The first couple of episodes were also funny and interesting when the ML and FL met and had a hilarious misunderstanding. But from episode 4 or something the drama went into lots of side plots and there was practically no relationship development for the main leads. I wasn't really invested in their romance (there was hardly any of it to be had! too many plots!) and was skipping plot arcs just to see what happened.

Anyway, it was interesting for a bit of the time (20%) and meh for a lot of the time (80%). No idea what they are doing with lakorns these days, the relationship development and character arcs are so sloppy unlike the good old days. Still, at least it was watchable and it had a lot to do with curiosity and a goodwill from its OG series.

  • "Watashi wo Moratte": Tsuioku Hen

    43. "Watashi wo Moratte": Tsuioku Hen

    Japanese Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    4.0

I thought the premise sounded interesting with the ghost + human interaction plus some posts on the Feeds gave me the impression that the main couple had good chemistry & romance but after 5 episodes out of 8, I found it not living up to expectations plus the FL having public chats with the ML (who is invisible to everyone else) and not being seen as funny or odd, and not being conscious or aware of how strange she looks all the time doing this (show only sometimes brings it up but only once in a while), is just weird as I kept thinking that FL was totally giving herself away. For a murder mystery and trying to investigate things, this is the stupidest way of drawing attention to oneself (which the show didn't even pick up on), is just sloppy and doesn't make sense. I didn't enjoy watching it as a result.

    Dropped at episosde 6.

  • Joy of Life Season 2

    44. Joy of Life Season 2

    Chinese Drama - 2024, 36 episodes

    5.5

Not as engaging or interesting as S1 despite the quality & continuity. It has been on-hold on episode 22 for a long while. Somehow unable to muster up the mood to continue as am not particularly interested in the events or characters and how they progress/ resolve themselves. Still giving it an above average rating as it could be that I am just not in the right mood to truly enjoy it but it is not a bad show.

Dropped at episode 22. Potential to resume depending on mood...

  • Love Is a Poison

    45. Love Is a Poison

    Japanese Drama - 2024, 12 episodes

    6.5

Nice to see a non-school BL again, especially from Japan. Interesting characters here but the relationship development could do with a little bit more work - I thought the main character fell a little too fast for the mystery boy. The cases & court room drama was also a bit contrived. Still, it was a fairly decent watch. At least I could finish it! :P

  • Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

    46. Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

    Chinese Drama - 2024, 32 episodes

    5.5

Was okay, some parts interesting but too much adventuring and not enough romance for me. It was starting to be hard work watching and I am not finding the show interesting enough to keep going.

    Dropped at episode 17.

  • Blossom

    47. Blossom

    Chinese Drama - 2024, 34 episodes

    7.0

Was actually interesting & engaging due to its rebirth & second-chance do-over plot premise, up to the point when the main leads got married and then it became a bit more loose & messy. More intrigue & plotting & plot twists and some things were not coherent or made sense. Anyway, I skipped from episode 25 straight to the end and didn't feel I missed much (read some spoilers in the comment section and it was enough).

Overall, not a bad show even if the last 10 episodes started to get less engaging. It's been a while since I've been able to engage with a show for a great extent of its run.

  • Story of Kunning Palace

    48. Story of Kunning Palace

    Chinese Drama - 2023, 38 episodes

    7.0

This was another interesting show, again for its rebirth & 2nd chance do-over premise, but I also started losing interest by the last 10 episodes. Romance was meh in the sense that I didn't find the couple to be romantic. I actually liked that the FL was scared of the ML for the first 3/4 of the show as it made their dynamic more complex & engaging. It also helped a lot that the FL had 2 other love-interests and that added flavour to her character & relationships. ML was a schemer but as a character he didn't particularly stand out from the pack, it felt like the other 2 MLs had more interesting dynamic with the FL, to me.

Anyway, the while the last 10 eps may have been a bit messy, it was another rather decent drama for watching.

  • Cells at Work!

    49. Cells at Work!

    Japanese Movie - 2024

    7.0

An informative & educational take on how some of the cells in our body works, particularly the immune system. It would have been nicer to have a more comprehensive view of the other parts of the body instead of just red & white blood cells, T-cells and the spincter muscles in the anus (though that one was funny!). The movie went into one of the main characters getting leukemia and what it was doing to the body but it would have been nicer to see how other parts of the body worked as there is so much more to see & explore. Anyway, for what it was worth, it was a good watch.

  • Konse mo Ochiru, Koinaraba.

    50. Konse mo Ochiru, Koinaraba.

    Japanese Drama - 2025, 27 episodes

    3.0

Weird, indie-like, reincarnation 3-lifetime BL story. Chaotic & not quite sure it made much sense (not sure what was going on but it had Dvorak 4th Movement music as some sort of theme).

Dropped after watching halfway. Still gave it a rating more than '1' because the plot premise is intriguing & mysterious. Would have been so much better if they had time to flesh out the relationship-development aspect. Also, shaky camera alert!

  • Marry My Husband: Japan

    51. Marry My Husband: Japan

    Japanese Drama - 2025, 10 episodes

    7.0

Interesting rebirth drama with both FL and ML. Last 2 episodes were a bit below par compared to the rest of the drama, and the relationship development between the main leads sort of got a bit shafted & stagnant towards the end in favour of plot twists but it was an interesting watch. My slight disatisfaction is over the moral plotline but that's personal because I'm not sure I can root over a plot premise which requires finding substitutes to the events in order to escape from them. It's not like anybody is really better than the others, even the so-called villains, in order to experience the bad things that happened in their place. In some sense, the main leads stole the lives of the villains and their 'happy' life was at the expense of other's deaths, which doesn't quite sit well with me. But that's just my personal issues/ values at play here.

Read the novel. Drama was a watered-down but decent adaptation but to be honest it was only watchable for the main leads and for the cleverly done humour (the 4 generals, the advisor, the odd side character). However, after around ep 20 when the main leads had settled into a steady relationship with each other, drama started to drag with the politics and villains. Show started to lose its charm.

    Dropped at ep25.

Started interesting with an FL transmigrated into the future and finding herself stuck in a xianxia world with a pscyhopathic & scheming ML. However, since I started watching this show while it was still airing, I stopped at episode 11 and did not find the motivation to pick it back up again. I tried re-watching ep11 again to see if I can generate renewed interest in it but at this point in time, nope, can't seem to muster up an interest in the show. I mean, it's not bad or boring but I guess it wasn't addicting or entertaining enough for me to want to pick it back up & continue.

So, currently Dropped at epiosde 11. Potential to continue in future if perhaps the mood hits...

Entertaining, fast-paced short-length series. Enjoyed rebirth/ transmigration setup (in a different body), the couple chemistry, and the quick movement of plot throughout. Obviously it won't be as polished or as tightly-written as the full-length dramas as some plot points didn't make much sense but I can tell the scriptwriters did try their best to tie events & consequences together to make it as coherent as possible, as opposed to the random throwing-things-out-there-to-move-plot-along device (which even the longer & supposedly better quality dramas are guilty of *ahem*Love and Redemption*ahem*) so honestly this is surprisingly decent.

Was intrigued by the synopsis but turns out the drama had a different vibe to what I was somehow expecting. I thought it was a revenge drama but with lots of romance. Turns out to be just a revenge drama with the ML not really doing much (or anything at all) and I could not see much chemistry between the couple from the few episodes I watched so the romance or couple wasn't going to be the main selling point for me. So, what was left with was the revenge, which I wasn't really that invested in.

    Dropped at episode 9.

This show found me at a season in life where I needed it. I was in a low mood and this drama spoke to me in a lot of ways & in many levels. It reminded me about the things that are truly important in life. The show focused a lot on finding someone who could understand you, which is a nice message, but as I was watching it also triggered a lot of thoughts for me, which is why although I am unlikely to rewatch this show because the story and the couple itself wasn't really that memorable or captivating, I am still rating this show slightly favourably.

This show made me contemplate that is that it's not really that vital to find someone who will understand you - because nobody on this earth will be able to truly or fully understand you; nor is it to find someone who will always know the right thing to say at the right moment/ season of your life, because nobody will be able to always get it right all the time since they won't know what sort of things are running through your mind, or what sort of emotions are going through your heart at that point in time. Nobody's perfect and they won't always be able to meet you in your point of need, but that's okay. The truly important thing isn't about full understanding or about getting things always right, but it's about whether someone really loves you or not, and about whether you know that they are acting out of love & care for you.

Gosh, this one started slow and a bit weak - one of the MLs had a tendency to speak in a very measured & hesitant manner, it made the scenes feel like it was almost on pause sometimes. But once I got used to it as a character trait (the character comes across as either autistic or on the spectrum, reminds me of someone I know hence the portrayal really made the character feel real), the show started to find its feet with me and the slow simmer really turned up the heat as more episodes progressed. I have to say, this was one of the very few shows which I personally thought kept improving the more I watched it, and I was more and more invested in the characters as episodes went by, and it ended with a surprisingly good solid finish too.

The relationship development was slow-burn but, I thought, really well done. The relationship dynamic here reminds me very much of UtsuKare with an initially cold, aloof, handsome & popular ML and a low-self-confidence, shy, adoring ML. There's enough similarities to make the dynamic interesting, but also enough differences in their personality traits to make this a refreshingly different show from UtsuKare. I particularly liked how both main leads had their little character struggles/ weaknesses which drove the dynamic & tension between them. There were no 3rd party conflicts so, again, it's a drama that's focused on the characters and their relationship with each other, which I really like.

  • Are You the One

Was able to finish another Cdrama here, yay. I enjoyed the 1st half better even if there was deception & lies as the main plot premise. I guess I liked the humour, the way the relationship developed, how they fell in love, and the internal conflicts & changes that arose in the ML from how he used her as bait to being unable to be without her. I always liked this part of the relationship development in stories especially if the writing makes it credible and coherent.

The 2nd half was less interesting for me and the bits I enjoyed best was seeing how the ML chased after the FL - ML was the best thing about this drama for me. I was fast-forwarding the love story between the FL's good friend & the ML's good friend a lot, and also through some of the politicking. Was glad I was able to finish this drama as I was getting rather disinterested in the 2nd half, and I also thought it sort of petered out towards the end with a rushed ending arc that tried to tie up loose ends quickly.

  • Learning to Love

    61. Learning to Love

    Japanese Drama - 2025, 11 episodes

    1.5

From some of the reviews & hype on the Feeds, I thought this would be a dark, complex and controversial romance which is why I picked it up to watch but what a huge disappointment. This is like a poor man's version of Majo no Jouken, only very poorly done on almost all fronts. Up to episode 5, I could not identify with almost any of the characters. The FL came across self-rightrous, foolish, inconsistent - I was increasingly starting to despise her the more the drama progressed - she was at times preachy, at times passive, able to stand up to some people but a complete doormat towards others, she never appeared to learn from her mistakes or from events around her, and whatever supposed 'growth' the show was trying to show was pure bravado. The ML had no growth either. In fact, nobody in the drama really grew up until episode 5. Worse, I could not understand how the relationship between the ML and FL developed, how their feelings developed, what sort of conflicts (if any) they felt - drama never really showed it, it seemed to come out from nowhere. Character development - fail. Relationship development - fail. Relatable FL & ML - fail.

    Dropped at episode 5.

  • Depth of Field

    62. Depth of Field

    Japanese Drama - 2025, 6 episodes

    6.5

Torn between rating it 6.5 or 7. It's a deliberately slow build up BL and focuses very much on the music!ML and his struggles with trying to fit in, his music and his self-confidence issues. The photographer!ML was like a steady rock of a friend and I can see why music!ML fell in love with him. I just wished there was a bit more story fleshed out from photographer!ML's side as we saw very little of him and therefore could not quite clock what he was thinking or feeling as much as the other main lead. Quite a bit of the drama was rather forgettable, but I have to say, there were a few scenes where the show really shone through - there was tension which you could cut with a knife - which made some parts of the show really sublime & memorable.

Was able to complete this with quite a bit of fast-forwarding. I wasn't really captivated with the characters or the acting - it was curiosity over how the story would pan out that kept me going until the end. For some reason, I wasn't able to warm up to either of the main leads - I didn't find either of them attractive, nor did I find their drama characters to be engaging, and I could not see or feel any chemistry between the characters on-screen. It felt very much like a draw-by-numbers type of production, for some reason it didn't feel realistic or real or relatable. I wonder if it is the way the drama was directed or in the acting which could not really convey the feelings or thoughts of the characters in a natural way. I just felt like I was watching people acting on screen, rather than their characters coming alive there. Anyway, at least I managed to finish it.

    Chinese Drama - 2025, 32 episodes

It's been a while since I've been able to enjoy a C-drama and this was a pleasant surprise. I thought the setup about a whole family transmigrating into ancient times and having to navigate the whole era as one cohesive unit was unique and very interesting. I really enjoyed the family dynamics portrayed here - there was such an interesting & consistently-written mix of characters, and their familial relationships were really well done with a good mix of funny but also relatable with the ups & downs of being family.

I also enjoyed the romance here, thought it was organically & well portrayed. I could understand the internal conflicts from both the ML and FL, and it was nice to see the progression and development, to the angst & yearning & persistence. I was very invested, which is such a nice surprise.

The only bit I wasn't that interested in were the background villain and the other side romances - ended up fast-forwarding through those bits in the last 10 episodes. But I also know that they were pretty necessary to setup up the whole backstory and bring that to a conclusion for the ML. Anyway, overall, it was a fun, engaging and enjoyable watch.

It was a fairly watchable BL. I thought it might be as good as Old Fashion Cupcake but it didn't quite have the emotional investment or vibe. I never quite understood when and how the younger subordinate ML started liking his boss and for the first few episodes I thought the show might show us that but nope, the show seemed to have just ran with the ambiguous couple theme. I also struggled to see any romantic chemistry between the MLs - they felt more like best buddies - so any romantic tension in the show was lost on me. This show was fairly watchable, not so much for the romance, but for just wanting to see how the older ML grappled with old age and singleness, which is always an interesting topic for me. So, not a huge binge watch, I took it slow, but at least the show kept my interest until the end.

An interesting BL which explores the impact of the lack of physical intimacy on men and how that can really damage a relationship. Interesting how one ML is in a gay relationship while the other is straight but the lack of sexual intimacy in both their relationships resulted in frustration and an eventual a distancing from their partners. I liked how the show explored this aspect a lot, and it is unsurprising the MLs bonded over their shared experience. But something was still a bit missing for me in this show and I'm not quite sure how to pin-point it. I mean, it was an interesting setup and interesting development but I wasn't sucked into the show the way I would be for shows that usually show complicated relationship situations. I think maybe it's because I may not have gotten a real handle on both the MLs - couldn't quite discern what sort of characters they were. It's not like they were blank or bland, but they just don't feel as fleshed out or as rounded as they could have been. I would have liked to know their individual characters a bit better rather than to see them through the lens of unresolved sexual frustration.

  • Fated Hearts

    67. Fated Hearts

    Chinese Drama - 2025, 38 episodes

This was actually a surprisingly engaging drama for a first watch. The story setup of enemies-tp-lovers from warring states along with the amnesia premise which created a situation where the main leads had to cooperate with each other despite their enmity was a great setup for organic relationship development. I really enjoyed their journey. I also liked the costumes, the fight scenes and the fast-paced nature of the show. I also thought the princess side story was interesting - how she went from spoiled princess to one who learnt how to be strong in order to survive in a hostile environment. I liked how she had to pay for the consequences of her stupid decision, did not blame others for it and learnt how to navigate with her own strength. I thought the motivations of a lot of the characters here made sense - the show took pains to give us sufficient exposition and background on them. A lot of flawed & complex characters here, which was one of the reasons I enjoyed watching a huge chunk of the show.

The reason why my rating isn't that high despite the interesting drama is... a lot of what made the drama interesting were the twists & turns in the story, not so much the romance. It's also not a fun drama where one can laugh over cute scenes and replay captivating sections. I enjoyed watching it without knowing the story but I'm not sure how much I would like to rewatch this in future now that the whole plot is known. Debating on rating it between 7.5 or an 8... but am giving it an 8 because it's a show I've been able to enjoy watching for a lot more & a lot longer than other Chinese dramas for a long long while.

  • Cinderella Closet

An interesting show with a cross-dressing ML and an FL who needed to learn how to be confident in her own skin. Actually, both of them needed to learn how to be confident in their own skin and it's nice to see how the drama developed that. I found the first 8 episodes to be interesting but slow-going - it focused on the FL's relationship with the 2nd ML and the ML's role as wingman. I only liked it from ep9 onwards where there was more development in the main leads' relationship, more progress and forward-thrust. One thing to note, I never really quite clocked when the ML fell for the FL (apparently early on but I couldn't quite see why though!), so that sudden development took me by surprise. Relationship development could definitely have been better but it was a cute little show.
