cheshire's guilty pleasures

These are dramas and movies that I know AREN'T objectively very good, and I wouldn't exactly recommend to whoever-- but I really liked anyway.

  • Guess Who I Am

    1. Guess Who I Am

    Chinese Drama - 2024, 24 episodes

    8.5

This one here is silly, cringe, nonsensical as fuck-- but guess what? I freaking loved pretty much everything about it, because besides all of that, this romantic comedy is also very self-aware and doesn't try to delude its viewers into thinking that it's any more than a romcom that shouldn't be taken seriously.

Good chemistry, likable characters and good humor-- you're bound for a good time with this one if you're into fluff.

    Chinese Drama - 2022, 27 episodes

I don't watch mini c-dramas, although they're the largest and most popular source of guilty pleasure/trashy dramas right now for nearly everyone. I've tried them several times, but I rarely complete them because the fast-paced choppy editing and shitty dubbing makes my eyes wince and my brain hurt.

This one, though? This one was GOOD. I don't know-- there's just something very attractive about baddie asskicking FLs protecting their submissive cute boyfriends. (there must be a better way to say this, but you get what I mean) The FL is the real show stealer, and she's FINE as hell, which I think is a rarity in c-dramas.

I really like this couple. They did another drama, which I haven't seen yet because they don't have an all-in-one compilation of it and I do NOT want to click on next episode 30+ times every 3 minutes.

  • Real:Time:Love Season 2

    3. Real:Time:Love Season 2

    Korean Drama - 2020, 8 episodes

    8.0

There's four seasons of this youtube web kdrama. I only put the second one because it's my favorite, but yes this drama is goofy fun at its BEST. The first two seasons play out as though the two leads are actual IRL best friends who make videos together on youtube. I couldn't help but binge-watch this one in like 2 days.

Their chemistry is sooo realistic and cute, and the comedy's funny albeit slapstick-y.

  • My Secret Romance

    4. My Secret Romance

    Korean Drama - 2017, 13 episodes

    9.5

Yes, I get it, the rating's INSANELY high and I don't rate anything this damn high anymore. But hey, this was me back in 2018 and I was obsessed with it. It's so damn cliche and corny, with all the wack romcom tropes, BUT... I love it, idc. I still do. Okay, NOT to the point that I still agree on the rating, but this drama holds a special place in my heart.

They don't make stuff like this anymore TT Also, can you believe that a channel like OCN came out with this production? Lol.

  • I'm Underage But I'm Not a Child

    5. I'm Underage But I'm Not a Child

    Japanese Movie - 2017

    9.0

This is one of the many cringey ass shoujo romance live action movies that I've watched, BUT somehow, this is kind of my favorite of them all. It's so ridiculous, I loved it!

  • See Your Love

    6. See Your Love

    Taiwanese Drama - 2024, 13 episodes

    8.0

The plot is as thin as paper, none of the conflicts actually really make any sense or even needed to exist on the first place, and I have a weird relationship with Taiwanese BLs-- BUT girl, the two dudes kissed a LOT and their chemistry was slappin'... sooo, since I'm just a simple girl with simple needs, I was SEATED.

  • "Watashi wo Moratte": Tsuioku Hen

    7. "Watashi wo Moratte": Tsuioku Hen

    Japanese Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

    8.0

Okay but like, I just KNOW the Korean webtoon this is based on is much worse than this. I just KNOW it. There was a time in the past when I used to love reading Korean webtoons... but with every year, my hatred gets a little bit deeper for heterosexual romance k-webtoons. They're all the damn same, with the same kind of art style and the same damn ML.

I did quite like this one, though. It was nothing special, but it still had its quirky details that made it feel like a J-drama at the end of the day.

  • Taikan Yoho

    8. Taikan Yoho

    Japanese Drama - 2023, 8 episodes

    8.0

This one here is a complete and total brainless fluff-n-smut BL drama with a bunch of steamy scenes and well... not much else. But hey, it is what it is! And I didn't hate it.

  • Just Friends?

    9. Just Friends?

    Korean Movie - 2009

    7.5

It's actually quite nice to see two currently famous Korean actors get really down and dirty on each other in an indie gay short film during the beginning of their careers.

Jokes aside-- their chemistry was so good, it's a pity we never saw them again in the same screen. Could you imagine? It won't even have to be a romance!

  • Choco Milk Shake

    10. Choco Milk Shake

    Korean Drama - 2022, 11 episodes

    7.5

When it's romance between a dude and his shapeshifting dog (plus a shapeshifting cat who romances another dude), you know it's a guilty pleasure in the making. I heard they were doing a second season, although I don't know if it's still happening.

  • A Dramatic Night

    11. A Dramatic Night

    Korean Movie - 2015

    9.0

This was a funny, raunchy and steamy romcom with its fair share of sexy stuff and tasteful comedy that might not be of everyone's taste. It's not really impactful or memorable, but personally? I loved it and I honestly don't really even know why. Maybe this one's due for a rewatch...

  • The Penthouse: War in Life

    12. The Penthouse: War in Life

    Korean Drama - 2020, 21 episodes

    7.0

This is the kind of unhinged insane bullshit I love. Sometimes.
