He was born in Bangkok, Thailand, to a family of Chinese expatriates, with ancestral roots in Taishan, Guangdong province. He received a BA degree in Speech and Drama from Oklahoma Baptist University and his master's degree in Fine Arts from Yale School of Drama (1962).
Back in Hong Kong, he was an actor and executive producer with the two major television broadcasters, and lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University. He was the first to introduce theatre of the Absurd and Broadway musicals to Hong Kong audiences in Cantonese with numerous stage performances, playing a crucial role in popularising Western drama locally. He was also a prominent figure at the dawn of Hong Kong's television industry. His translated productions in the 1960s, such as "Death of a Salesman", "Our Town", and "A Hatful of Rain", galvanized the local theatre scene. And, he has since directed and performed in over a hundred stage productions. He collaborated in founding the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre in 1977, and later served as the founding Dean of Drama at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts from 1985 until his retirement in 2001.
He is the founder and chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies, Art Form Panels of the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Chairman of Exploration Theatre, and Art Director of Hong Kong Arts Development Council. He also holds an honorary fellowship at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and an honorary doctorate from Armstrong University of California.
