Born in Sampaloc, Manila, Philippines, de Castro was the son of William Henry Gardner, an American soldier from Tennessee who worked as police officer in Manila, and Ceferina De Castro. In the 1930's he joined a movie company and became an actor. Thanks to his pleasant look, he was known as "The Rudolph Valentino of the Philippines". Later he became a director.
De Castro was married with actress Rita Rica and the couple had two sons.
He died of stroke in Baguio City in 1955.
