Hong Ae Kyung, known professionally as Bae Yeon Jung, is a South Korean comedian, businesswoman and former singer. She graduated from Dongduk Girls' High School. She made her debut in 1969 as a trot singer and theater actress and one year later she debuted as a musical actress but quickly realized she was not properly trained or had the skills to be successful in any of those activities. So, in 1971, decided to try for the 1st open recruitment for comedians at MBC and passed the test and made her debut in the MBC show "Good Luck When You Smile (웃으면 복이와요)". During the 1980s, she was often paired with comedian/actor Bae Il Jib in many dramas or comedy shows, so she decided to use a stage name that included Bae and chose Bae Yeon Jung. She has battled through a lot of debt due to a failed business but now owns a very successful chain of Someori gukbap restaurants in South Korea. In 2003, doctors found a malignant tumor in her pancreas and removed most of it trying to avoid pancreatic cancer. She survived but has to live with diabetes as a side effect of losing most of her pancreas. She has recently appeared on several Channel A and TV Chosun shows promoting a healthier life style.
