His stint as a drama actor began in 1982 with the Central Experimental Theatre. In 1989, he played young Mao Ze Dong at the 70th anniversary of the founding of Communist Part of China. He then became a "special actor" specializing in Mao Ze Dong, and has since then played the role at youth to middle-age in more than 30 films and TV dramas.
Over the years, he has won several awards including the 8th China Film Huabiao Award for Outstanding Actor in 2001 for "Mao Ze Dong in 1925"; the 9th Golden Phoenix Award in 2003; the 22nd China Gold Award for Favourite Actor for "My Long March" and the Golden Rooster Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2007; and the 25th China Golden Eagle Awards for Favourite Actor for "The Founding of the PRC" in 2010. In 2018, Wang won the award of "60 Years of Chinese TV Drama Series - Character Volume".
In 1981, Wang married Peking opera actress Cheng Yu Fu. They divorced officially in Octobr 1997 after 16 years of marriage. In 2000, Wang met makeup artist He Ya Lin in Yunnan during the filming of "Mao Ze Dong in 1925". They married two years later in July 2002.
