Namishima began his acting career after passing the New Face auditions at Taiyo Film in 1950 and made his debut in 1951 with "Waga Iko Jidai no Hanzai." He adopted the stage name Namishima Susumu in 1953.
In addition to acting, he was involved in business as president of Shoei Corporation. After retiring from the entertainment industry in 1971, he focused on managing bowling alleys and pachinko operations in Tochigi and owning apartments in Tokyo.
