Choi Sung Yong is a South Korean retired footballer and current coach. He graduated from Masan Technical High School and later obtained a degree from Korea University. He mainly played as a defender and occasionally as a midfielder. After graduating from college, he immediately enlisted to fulfill his mandatory military service where he played for Sangmu FC. His service was cut slightly short as he was selected to represent South Korea in the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. In 1999, he moved to Japan where he played for Visel Kobe for two seasons before moving to Austria in 2001 when he joined LASK Linz for one season. In 2002, he returned to South Korea after signing with Suwon Samsung Bluewings where he spent 4 seasons and was also selected as part of the South Korean national team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup but did not play at all. In 2006, he went back to Japan and played one season for Yokohama FC. before returning back home to play with Ulsan Hyundai for one year. He finished his career in Japan's 2nd division, where he played for Thespa Kusatsu between 2008 and 2010 before retiring. As a defender, he only scored 2 goals in his career (one for LASK and one for Suwon) and scored 1 international goal in a regional tournament against China in 1998. In 2023, he became the caretaker manager of Suwon Samsung Bluewings after the original coach was fired.
