Born in Tokyo, his birth name is Horikoshi Yutaka (堀越豊). He previously performed as an actor under the stage names Nakamura Tomotaka (中村友隆) and Nakamura Yutaka (中村豊). After adopting the name Saruwaka Seizaburo (猿若清三郎) and becoming headmaster, he focused on choreography and instruction in traditional Japanese dance and served as the Chairman of the All Japan Dance Federation.
In 2012, he transferred the name Saruwaka Seizaburo to his eldest son, Saruwaka Yuki (猿若裕貴), and took on the title of the second-generation Saruwaka Kiyokata.
