In 1959, Okamoto married actress Mori Mitsuko (森光子), but the couple divorced in 1963. That same year, he left TBS. Later, he became a professor at Osaka University of Economics and Law (大阪経済法科大学) and Meisei University (明星大学), where he taught visual theory and broadcasting theory. In his later years, he also served as an advisor to the Japan Journalists Association (日本ジャーナリスト会議).
Okamoto passed away on October 24, 2004, at the age of 79 from prostate cancer in a hospital in Kobe.
