Yamada Masaki is a Japanese novelist born in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan. He graduated from Meiji University (明治大学) with a degree in Political Science and Economics. Yamada is a member of the Japan Mystery Writers Association (本推理作家協会) and the Authentic Mystery Writers Club (本格ミステリ作家クラブ), and was previously a member of the Japan Adventure Writers Club (日本冒険作家クラブ).

He served as the 9th Secretary-General and the 12th President of the Japan SF Writers Association (日本SF作家クラブ) before resigning and rejoining the association in 2021. Yamada initially aspired to be a manga artist and worked as an editor for the magazine "Talk's Special" (話の特集) in the late 1960s.

After taking a year off from university to live on a kibbutz in Israel, he returned to Japan and graduated. He contributed to the fanzine "Uchujin" (宇宙塵), where his debut work, "Throwing Dice into the Endgame Curve" (終末曲面に骰子を投げ入れて), was published. He later joined an encyclopedia publishing company, Hyakka Jiten no Shuppansha (百科事典の出版社), but left after six months.
