Shan Ji Xiang was born in Beijing, China. His ancestral home is Jiangning, Jiangsu, China. He started working in January 1971 and joined the Party in June 1985. Since 2002, he has been a member of the Party Leadership Group of the Ministry of Culture, Director and Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.

In 2003, he entered the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University as a graduate student in urban planning and obtained a doctorate in engineering, a senior architect, and a registered planner. He is a part-time professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Cultural Heritage of Northwest University, and a researcher and doctoral supervisor at the Chinese Academy of Arts.

In early January 2012, Shan was appointed as the Director of the Palace Museum. He is currently the President of the Chinese Cultural Relics Society and the Vice Chairman of the Architectural Society of China. On September 22, 2014, Shan Jixiang won the "Forbes Award", the highest academic honor in the cultural relics protection profession. On January 6, 2016, he was awarded the "2015 Chinese Cultural Figure".
