He began his acting career in 1959 with the Shochiku film "High Teen" (ハイティーン) and signed with Nikkatsu in 1962, appearing primarily in youth-oriented films. After leaving Nikkatsu, he worked as a freelance actor.
In 1978, Yamamoto retired from acting and transitioned to a career in painting.
