Minami Shinsuke was a Japanese comedian, actor, TV host, and talent born in Hongo-ku, Tokyo, Japan. His eldest son is the second-generation comedian Minami Shinsuke. He studied at Suginami Daiichi Elementary School.

In 1940, when he was in the fourth grade of elementary school, he joined the children's theater troupe "Toto" and began his entertainment career.

After the war, he graduated from Nihon University Second High School and then entered the Film Department of Nihon University's College of Art, but he dropped out. Later, he joined Asaka Mitsuyo 's troupe.

Subsequently, he joined the theater associated with Kogyo Toyo, where he took over the nighttime cabaret performances. As the "Minami-Totsuka Duo," they performed in cabaret stages at night and in theaters during the day. However, he abruptly left the group and moved alone to Osaka for over a year. There, he co-formed the comedy group "Otokoboke Guys", performing mainly at Osaka theaters.

After disbanding "Otokoboke Guys," he returned to the Tokyo stage in 1961. He joined Ohta Production as an individual performer, while continuing cabaret performances under the "Minami-Totsuka Duo" name.

Through his connection with Tamagawa Ryoichi, he got a chance to appear on television.

On the afternoon of December 8, 1982, the day after recording "Shinsuke Minami's Dekoboko University," Minami was found collapsed in the darkened living room of his home by his wife Kazuko and his assistant, who had just returned from an outing. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance but was already unconscious with no pulse or breathing. He died from a ruptured dissecting aortic aneurysm at the age of 52 without regaining consciousness.
