He graduated from the Army Officer Academy and experienced the end of World War II while at the academy. After that, he attended Hokkaido University but dropped out. He apprenticed under Inomata Katsuto and worked his way up from the literary department of a children's theater group to NHK radio programs before making his debut as a screenwriter in 1957. His debut work was the film "Obosatsu Toge".
He also served as a director at the establishment of the Japan Writers Guild.
On October 17, 2022, he passed away from natural causes at the age of 95.
