He graduated from TVB's 14th Artist Training Class and started his career as an extra. He attended Salesian School and Salesian English School. After completing Form 3, he moved to Canada with his family and later studied mechanical engineering at the University of British Columbia. After returning to Hong Kong in 1999, he worked briefly as a project supervisor for a glass curtain wall company before joining TVB's Artist Training Class.
Ma met Jacqueline Wong in 2015 during the filming of Inspector Gourmet. The two announced their relationship in 2017 but broke up after Wong was discovered to be cheating on him with married star Andy Hui in April 2019.
On June 12th, 2020, he and TVB actress Roxanne Tong revealed that they were dating. They became engaged in 2023 and they got married in December 2023.
