Zachwatowicz graduated from the History of Art Faculty at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow in 1952 and later from the Scenography Faculty at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in 1958. She debuted as a scenographer in 1958 with "Rzymska Kurtyzana" at the Teatr Zagłębia. In 1960, she moved to Sosnowiec and became associated with the student theatre of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice.
From 1958 until the 1970s, Zachwatowicz was also an actress at Kraków's Piwnica pod Baranami.
