He graduated from Yao Junior High School in Osaka, Japan. He entered the Second Waseda High School Academy but dropped out. He is believed to have dropped out in 1942. Already over the conscription age of 20, he entered the Department of Literature and Arts at Meiji University in April 1943 to avoid conscription, but he was expelled in May 1945, just before the end of the war.
He joined the army as part of the student mobilization and served as a private, fighting across the Chinese mainland until the end of the war in the summer of 1945. After spending time as a prisoner of war in Nanjing, he was repatriated in 1946.
In 1947, he moved to Tokyo, living in Mitaka, Tokyo, alongside Dazai Osamu and Ono Saneo, collectively known as the "Three Eccentrics of Mitaka." During this period, he was employed by a publishing firm in the Kansai region and actively engaged with the avant-garde art scene through the "Yoru no Kai" movement. In 1949, he married the younger sister of the wife of the poet Maekawa Saeo. In 1950, he lived a wandering life in Kobe and was hospitalized due to methamphetamine addiction.
Having worked in different fields, he relocated to Tokyo once more in 1952. It was through his connection in the music scene that he met Saito Junichi, an executive at Shinchosha. While employed as an external proofreader for the company, he began writing novels, yet the majority of his submissions faced rejection.
He had a passion for cars, yet in May 1961, he faced arrest for driving under the influence. Then, on January 31, 1964, while speeding in his personal vehicle wearing traditional Japanese sandals along National Route 1 in Tomita-cho, Suzuka, Mie, Japan, he collided head-on with a truck, sustaining severe injuries, including internal organ damage. Subsequently, on July 24, 1965, he was detained for causing a fatal traffic accident in Nagoya, Japan, due to reckless driving and speeding, leading to the deaths of a 60-year-old woman and her 6-year-old grandson. In 1966, Gomi received a sentence of one year and six months imprisonment with a five-year probation period.
In 1980, he passed away at the age of 58 due to lung cancer.
