Xia Gang, a Chinese director and actor born in Beijing, China, began his career as a municipal engineering worker before pursuing studies in the Directing Department at the Beijing Film Academy in 1978. Following graduation, he briefly returned to municipal engineering due to quota constraints, but in 1983, he transitioned to Beijing Film Studio as a director.
