Hayashi Tsuchitaro

In April 1937, at age 15, he joined the sound department of Nikkatsu's Kyoto Studio as a recording assistant when Chiezo Production merged into Nikkatsu. During World War II, in February 1942, Nikkatsu's production departments merged with Daito Eiga and Shinko Kinema to form Daiei Film, where Hayashi continued working in the sound department. He briefly left the job when drafted into the military but returned after the war in 1945.
In 1950, Hayashi was the chief assistant to sound engineer Otani Iwao on the film "Rashomon." By 1953, he was promoted to sound engineer for Arai Ryohei's film "Mito Komon Jigoku Daiko." In 1970, he left Daiei and established the independent Kyoto Cine Studio. His first independent work was "Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo" that same year. Following Daiei's bankruptcy in December 1971, he worked on projects for Katsu Production and television films at Toei Kyoto Studio.
In 2007, he published his book "A Life Devoted to Film Sound Engineering: Sixty Years at Daiei Kyoto" through Soshisha. Hayashi passed away from natural causes on July 9, 2015, in a hospital in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto, at the age of 93.
