He made his debut in 2004 as a forward by joining Incheon United where he stayed for 3 years in the reserve team. At the beginning of the 2007 season, he signed for Daegu FC where he was one of the league's top South Korean scorers.
In 2009, he moved to Japan on a 9-month contract to Júbilo Iwata and after failing to negotiate a transfer to France's Paris St.-Germain, he stayed with the team until the end of the 2010 season when he moved to Gamba Osaka.
He returned to South Korea in 2012, signing for Ulsan Hyundai on a 3-year deal. He led the team to the AFC Champions League title and won the Asian Footballer of the Year award and the Champions League MVP award. After his mandatory military service, he moved to Qatar where he played for one season in El-Jaish Sports Club before returning to South Korea.
He spent the following years playing for Jeju United (2016), Gangwon FC (2017-2018), and Ulsan Hyundai (2019-2022) before retiring with Daegu FC at the end of the 2023 season.
Internationally, he represented his country at the 2007 Asian Cup. the 2008 Summer Olympics, and the 2014 FIFA World Cup, scoring 19 goals in 84 appearances for the senior squad.
He has served as the president of the Korea Professional Football Players Association since 2019 and as the director of the Korea Football Association since 2023. He worked as a commentator for KBS for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and now works for Coupang Play.
