During his student years, Utena worked part-time on commercial sets and was inspired to pursue a career in the film industry after visiting a film set of Kurosawa Akira. In 1990, he joined Tanuki Kobo, a company led by prop master Hamamura Koichi, whom he met at Kurosawa’s set.
He transitioned to freelancing in 1995, specializing in set decoration and props, and has been with Toho Eizo Bijutsu since 2008.
