In high school, he participated in the 39th President's Cup National High School Baseball Championship in 2005 and led his school to their first championship since 1988. Then, in September 2006, he was selected for the South Korea junior national team and won the gold medal at the 2006 World Junior Baseball Championship in Cuba. He has represented his country at the senior level in three Asian Games and one World Baseball Classic.
As a pro, he was selected by the KIA Tigers in the second round (9th overall) of the 2007 KBO Draft. He spent 14 seasons with the club and had an overall record of 147 wins and 95 losses. In 2021, he moved to the United States and played for the Texas Rangers for one year, but struggled considerably and decided to return to South Korea.
In 2022, he rejoined the KIA Tigers where he currently plays.
