In 2008, his son, Jonathan Su (蘇辰帆), was swept away by an undercurrent while scuba diving off the coast of San Francisco. The following year, Su Ta Chen retired from the National Taiwan Ocean University and founded the Jonathan Su Foundation (蘇帆海洋文化藝術基金會) in Hualien in his son's memory.
