Mayama graduated from the Japanese Literature Department at Japan Women's University (日本女子大学) in 1943. In the same year, she left her father's household and joined the avant-garde theater group Zenshinza (前進座) as an actress. She later moved to the Shinkyo Gekidan (新協劇団) in 1947 and co-founded the Shin Seisakuza Theatre Group (新制作座劇団) in 1950. In 1952, she wrote, directed, and starred in her first play, Dorokabura (泥かぶら).
In 1963, she established the Shin Seisakuza Cultural Center in Hachioji, Japan. Mayama was the eldest daughter of the playwright Mayama Seika (真山青果) and was married to actor Makimura Kokichi (槙村浩吉). Her grandchild, Mayama Ranri (眞山蘭里), the adopted son of her son Mayama Seiji (真山正治), became the chairman of Shin Seisakuza after her death.
She passed away in 2006 at the age of 83 due to old age.
