He began his career in 1977 when he joined the Hyundai Basketball Team. He spent 2 seasons with the team before he had to enlist in the military. He was unable to become a star due to his height and decided to retire in 1982.
He spent one year working for Hyundai in Baghdad, Iraq and returned to South Korea in 1985. When Kim Dong Won suddenly quit the Yonsei University basketball team, he was appointed as interim coach, ending up spending 17 years there.
He also spent a few years coaching at the professional level, before retiring in 2009. He is now a business owner, a guest professor, and a guest commentator for MBC.
