She made her debut in 1998 as FIN.K.L's main vocalist with their first album, "Blue Rain". She was discovered after she won a 1993 radio contest after singing Mariah Carey's "Hero".
The group was managed by DSP Media (DSP 미디어) and quickly formed a rivalry with S.E.S. At the time, the trend of the late 1990s was to have K-pop groups sing cute and catchy music. They were noticed for doing the opposite as their debut album featured an R&B influence, and her powerful vocals immediately stood out above all the rest.
FIN.K.L has never officially disbanded, but their last studio album was released in 2002, and all member left DSP in 2006 to focus on their individual activities. They have reunited several times for variety shows or special occasions in 2003, 2005, 2009, and 2019.
In 2003, she made her debut as a solo artist with the single "I...", which entered the top 10 of Korean music charts. Her popularity increased in 2004, and she was invited to appear in musical theater.
She made her debut in 2005 with a role in the musical "Aida" but was criticized for overacting in some of the scenes. She kept practicing and being chosen in other musicals and is now viewed as one of the most popular leading ladies of South Korean musical theater, described as charismatic and with amazing vocal skills.
She is represented by TOI Entertainment (TOI 엔터테인먼트).
