Hu An is a Chinese director born in Beijing, China. After being assigned to work as a waitress following middle school, she studied independently and passed the college entrance exam when it resumed in 1977. She enrolled in Beijing International Studies University that year and moved to the U.S. in 1979 to study at New York University, among the earliest Chinese students to go abroad after the Cultural Revolution. Initially working in international business, she shifted to filmmaking after meeting Chen Kai Ge (陳凱歌) in 1987 and later studied at NYU Film School.

Her directorial debut, "Old Stories of Mountains and Rivers" (山河旧话), was released in 1992.
