He made his debut in December 1986 after winning the MBC University Song Festival with the single "The First Snow Is Falling" and enjoyed huge popularity in the late 1980s as a ballad singer. He released his first full album in early 1987, and it included the single "Because I Love You", which helped him win the Golden Disk Rookie of the Year award.
In 1993, he was disillusioned with the South Korean music industry, so he moved to New York, where he lived for 5 years and owned several restaurants and nightclubs. He came back home and released a new album in 1999, but his popularity was not as high as it was, so he opted to become a vocal trainer and also opened restaurants in Seoul.
