Kwak Jung Gyun, later legally changed to Kwak Ji Gyun, was a South Korean film director and screenwriter. He graduated from Daejeon High School and later obtained an associate's degree in Film from Seoul College of the Arts.

He entered the entertainment industry in 1980 as an assistant director and made his directorial debut in 1986 with the film "Winter Wanderer", winning the Best New Director award at the Grand Bell Awards. He faced a decline in his career in the early 2000s when his movies were box office failures. He began suffering from severe depression, financial troubles, and loneliness that lasted for nearly 10 years. He decided to retire from the industry in 2009.

Sadly, at the age of 55, he committed suicide by burning coal briquettes in his home and died of carbon monoxide poisoning. As he lived alone, his body was not found until several days later when the neighbors complained of a bad smell coming from his home. A police investigation quickly ruled out foul play and established the time of death on May 25, 2010.
