She became part of YG Entertainment (YG엔터테인먼트) in 2006, and her first credited appearance in a song was in 2008, rapping in Uhm Jung Hwa's "DJ". By then, rumors of a new girl group labeled as the female version of BIGBANG began circulating online.
She made her debut in March 2009 as 2NE1's leader, main rapper, lead dancer, lead vocalist and face of the group with the digital single "Lollipop", recorded alongside BIGBANG members as a promotion campaign for a cellphone by LG. Their first official EP, "2NE1", was released in May of that year, and the lead single, "Fire", became an instant hit, and the group's popularity increased. They became known for their musical experimentation, fashion, and stage presence and they are recognized for expanding girl group styles in the South Korean music industry. They also were the first girl group to have a world tour and held concerts in several countries.
She made her debut as a solo artist in May 2013 with the single "The Baddest Female". However, the group went on hiatus in early 2014 as all members began focusing on individual activities. She moved to the United States and debuted there in November 2015 with the single "Hello Bitches", part of her first EP, "Lifted", which was released in its entirety in August 2016.
Then, in November 2016, YG announced 2NE1's disbandment as the group had been on a nearly two-year break, and all members were doing other activities. She left the agency in November 2019 when her contract expired.
After spending time at Konnect Entertainment from 2021 until 2023, she created her own team called Very Cherry to handle her domestic activities. She is represented by Schoolboy Records for her activities in the US.
In July 2024, she reunited with the other members to celebrate their 15th anniversary and performed in music shows and held several concerts. YG announced that the concerts will continue in 2025 as they will remain active for the time being.
