Before debuting, she was scouted by SM Entertainment in 2000 while on a family visit to South Korea. She is the older sister of former F(X) member Krystal Jung. She appeared in several commercials since 2002.
She made her debut in August 2007 as the group's main vocalist with the single "Into The New World", part of their self-titled album "Girls' Generation", released in November of that year. They quickly became one of the most known South Korean figures and successful K-pop groups worldwide and have earned numerous accolades and been labeled as "The Nation's Girl Group". They rose to fame in 2009 with the single "Gee", which claimed the top spot on KBS's "Music Bank" for a record-breaking nine consecutive weeks and was Melon's most popular song of the 2000s decade.
Individually, she made her theatrical debut in November 2009 with the lead role in the South Korean production of the musical "Legally Blonde". In March 2010, she had a cameo role in the SBS drama "Oh! My Lady". Then, in August 2014, she launched her own fashion line, Blanc, which was later renamed Blanc & Eclare. She also appeared as a regular member of several variety shows.
However, in September 2014, she claimed she was being forced out of the group. SM confirmed her statement but had no further comments as she remained under contract with the company. She later released another statement through her fashion company explaining that she had been asked to leave GIRLS' GENERATION by both the agency and the other members as her business activities had become a distraction as they were impossible to match with the group's schedule. Her final song with the group was "Divine", which was included in the repackaged version of their Japanese greatest hits album, "The Best".
In August 2015, SM Entertainment and her officially agreed to terminate her contract. She expanded her acting career to mainland China. In February 2016, she joined Coridel Entertainment (코리델 엔터테인먼트) and made her debut as a solo artist, releasing the EP "With Love, J" in May of that year and later going on several fan meets around Asia.
In May 2018, she signed with United Talent Agency to represent her in North America for music, film, television and endorsements. In September 2020, she became a book author when her novel "Shine" was launched as part of a two-book deal with Simon Pulse, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
She continues to be represented by Coridel and promotes as a solo artist while also being active in the Chinese market and taking care of her businesses.
