Jolin Tsai is a Taiwanese singer born in Xinzhuang, Taipei, Taiwan. She gained recognition in 1998 by winning the championship in the MTV Mandarin Channel singing competition program "New Voice Placement Battle." She released her debut album, "1019," in September 1999, shortly after signing with Universal Music.

Tsai has a quarter Babuza heritage through her maternal grandmother, a member of the Taiwanese indigenous Babuza tribe. Her educational background includes attending Xinzhuang Elementary School, Xinzhuang Junior High School, and Taipei Municipal Jingmei Girls High School.

In 2002, she signed with Sony Music, followed by a contract with Congress Music, a subsidiary of EMI Music, in 2006. In 2009, she established her own company, C-Pop. Later, on December 16, 2008, she signed a contract with Warner Music.
