Jang Pil Soon is a South Korean singer-songwriter. She graduated from Seomun Girls' High School and later obtained a bachelor's degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment from the Seoul Institute Of The Arts. Before debuting, she had previously played in a university creative musical group called "Sunlight Village" and contributed a song to a compilation of the Seoul Institute of the Arts campus musicians.

She debuted in 1984, appearing on KBS’ "March of Youth" at the age of 21. However, she managed to attract a significant following due to her understated way of singing and her fresh approach to typical song styles. Her 1st album came in 1989 when she finally had the opportunity to release one. It had a mix of underground folk and fusion jazz, which she continued on her 2nd album before switching to other genres such as modern rock (3rd-5th albums), electronica (6th album), and ambient music (7th album onwards).

Unlike many female singers, she prefers to sing in the lower register and applies an untrained, folk-style voice to her music and all her albums have been labeled as masterpieces and were listed in the top 100 Korean popular music albums during the 1990s and 2000s.
