Born in Meguro-ku, Tokyo, he's the middle of three brothers (sister and brother). He was scouted by the second generation Johnny Kitakawa who worked for the US Embassy, and formed "Johnnys" with Osami Iino, Teruhiko Aoi and Ryo Nakatani. Debuted in 1962, he won hits such as "Wakai Namida" (1964) and Taiyo no Aitsu (Guy of the Sun) and worked as a super idol talent. At age 42 Hiromi Maie's name changed to Hiromitsu Makiya, served as an assistant host for "Your at 3 o'clock", and also appeared in "Mr. Tokyo Chatarei".
At 54, he became a naming parenter and changed the stage name to Shotaro Tachibana, and entered television dramas and stages. He became a taxi driver at 57. He wrote the books, "High! Please-Johnny's Taxi Record" and his biography. He was married to voice performer Shirakawa Kahoru. He died on March 6, 2000.
