Kim Tae Yeon
- Name: Kim Tae Yeon
- Native name: 김태연
- Also Known as: Taeyeon
- Nationality: South Korean
- Gender: Female
- Born: March 9, 1989
- Age: 36
Before debuting, she attended SM Academy while in middle school and had vocal lessons from singer The One. Her father was not keen on her becoming a singer but the school's principal convinced him to bring her to have lessons. After 3 years, she was cast by SM Entertainment (SM엔터테인먼트) in 2004 after winning first place in the S.M. Youth Singing Competition.
She made her debut in August 2007 as the group's leader and main vocalist with the single "Into The New World", part of their self-titled album "Girls' Generation", released in November of that year. They quickly became one of the most known South Korean figures and successful K-pop groups worldwide and have earned numerous accolades and been labeled as "The Nation's Girl Group". They rose to fame in 2009 with the single "Gee", which claimed the top spot on KBS's Music Bank for a record-breaking nine consecutive weeks and was Melon's most popular song of the 2000s decade.
Individually, she earned recognition for several OSTs, including the single "If" for the 2008 KBS drama "Hong Gil Dong", which became more popular than the drama itself. Following a radio hosting job in 2009, she ventured into acting, making her theatrical debut in a lead role in the 2010 musical "A Song to the Sun". She also collaborated with singers like Kim Bum Soo and Ahn Young Min, among many others.
In April 2012, she debuted as part of the group's first sub-unit, GIRLS' GENERATION-TTS (소녀시대-태티서; also known as TAETISEO), alongside Tiffany and Seo Hyun. They released their debut EP, "Twinkle", which became the country's 8th best-selling album of the year.
In February 2014, she joined the project group S.M. THE BALLAD (에스엠 더 발라드), consisting of various artists under SM Entertainment. They debuted in November 2010, and the group reunited in 2014 with a new lineup that included him, releasing their EP, "Breath". However, they have been inactive since then.
In October 2015, she made her debut as a solo artist with the EP "I". It peaked at number two on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart and charted atop the US Billboard World Albums. She then released more new material, held solo concerts, made her Japanese solo debut, and went on her first Asian tour.
In September 2018, she became part of the group's second sub-unit, GIRLS' GENERATION-OH!GG (소녀시대-Oh!GG), alongside the other 4 members who renewed their contracts with SM. They released the single "Lil' Touch".
In December 2021, SM decided to create a new project called GIRLS ON TOP (걸스 온 탑). The concept involved 7 female idols from the company joining forces to form a group with a rotating lineup depending on the genre, theme and other factors. She was part of the project's first group, GOT THE BEAT (갓 더 비트), and released the digital single "Step Back" in January 2022. SM ended the project after 1 year and 3 months after Kakao acquired part of the company.
She has continued to promote as a solo artist as all the group members are busy with their individual activities.
