Mori Kikue

In 1929, she made her stage debut with the comedy troupe Kigekiza in the play Goi ni Makasete (御意に任せて). She later joined the Tsukiji-za Theater in 1932, and in 1934, left the troupe to help establish the Sakuseiza with Kizaki Yutaka, Kiyokawa Tamae, and Tatsuoka Shin. She left Sakuseiza in 1937 and joined the Mizuho Theater Company in 1940.
Mori made her film debut in 1937 with Karayuki-san (からゆきさん). In 1946, she founded the Mori Kikue Theater Institute in Kyoto, which became the Kurumiza Theater Company in 1948, one of the oldest theater companies in Kyoto’s new theater scene.
She married art historian Mori Toru, after which her name became Mori Kiku. She passed away on August 20, 2001, at the age of 97 from pneumonia at a hospital in Shizuoka.
