Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, nicknamed Tom, is a Thai screenwriter and film director. He studied in New York from 1977-1985. Upon returning to Thailand, he worked at the Film Factory with fellow director Wisit Sasanatieng. His film debut came in 1997 with the release of "Fun Bar Karaoke". At Film Factory, Pen-Ek made several television commercials, for which he won numerous awards, including a bronze medal at the 1997 Cannes Lion Awards for a Clairol anti-dandruff shampoo spot entitled "Dance".
