Funabashi Gen was a Japanese actor born in Obihiro City, Hokkaido. In 1948, while attending the preparatory course at Hosei University, he passed the first New Face of Toyoko Film (the predecessor of Toei), dropped out of college and joined the company, and made his debut with "Thief of the Moonlight Castle". After leaving the company, he pursued a career in radio dramas for Nippon Cultural Broadcasting.

In his private life, he suffered from diabetes due to his drinking habits.

In his later years, he suffered from blindness and hearing loss due to a hemorrhage. In 1974, at the age of 43, he died of pancreatic cancer.
