After graduating from Pyongyang First Middle School (平壌府第一中学), Uchida worked for Higashiman Waryu Coal Mine (東満和竜炭鉱), a subsidiary of Manchurian Coal Mines (満州炭鉱). He was drafted into military service in 1941 and stationed in Incheon during the final stages of World War II. After returning to Japan in 1945, he joined the Hokkaido Development Corporation (北海道開拓公社) in 1946 and later worked for Ube Industries' (宇部興産) Osaka branch in the cement division.
Uchida moved to Tokyo in 1965, leaving Takarazuka Film, and joined the Modern Theater Association's (現代演劇協会) troupe Keyaki the following year. From 1969, he worked as a freelance actor.

In addition to acting, Uchida was a researcher of the works of Japanese novelist and poet Miyazawa Kenji (宮沢賢治), authoring books on the subject. He also served as a professor at Akita Keijo Junior College (秋田桂城短期大学) and a theater theory lecturer at Aoyama Gakuin Women's Junior College (青山学院女子短期大学).
His son, Uchida Takeshi (内田岳志), is a voice actor.
Uchida passed away from stomach cancer on September 30, 1996, at the age of 76.
